Subject: Lake Erie Muskie???????

Well guys, I am a muskie nut. I spend most of my time on St. Clair and the Detoit R. But am putting serious thoughts into a new adventure this summer. I am going to spend some time fishing for muskie on Lake Erie in Michigan waters. You may say, OK this guy is on a wild goose chase. The reason I am seriously thinking this is an untapped fishery is the following. I personally have caught a couple fish while bass fishing. I know of several other incidental catches. These all seem to center around the area of Brest Bay. I am looking for any info of guys who have explored this area or have details of any accidental catches. We gotta be looking for the next hot spot.

We have spent time fishing the dumping grounds in front of the mouth of the river and have caught a few but have always had better luck in the river, good luck and let us know how it goes.

Jerry,
Are you talking the dumping grounds off the banana dike?? Did you catch them casting or trolling??? I do a lot of casting in the Detroit R. in June and do quite well, but once the weeds get really thick, it get's tough. Thanks for the info!!!! Good fishing!!!

Well guys, I just talked to a friend who hooked and lost a nice musky while trolling in the Canada waters of Erie off the Detroit R. Looks like more evidence for my research.

I have heard a story through my nanny (blah, blah, blah) that her father is catching skis around the islands, etc while fishing for walleye (sometimes several in a weekend--losing some as well as they are underprepared). With the the plethora of eyes in there you know there are some darn big skis lurking around.......I have another friend who fishes eastern Erie near the river and sees some monsters while smallie fishing. Best I can tell, Erie is FULL OF SKI's and is UNDERFISHED for them except for out east. The walleye industry there has been the main focus for most anglers by tradition. This is only a guestimate and is based on a number of factual fishing experiences of others and through reading/listening. Erie is fairly shallow and it makes good sense. The skis there likely are NOT used to musky lures and it may be a relatively UNTAPPED MUSKIE FISHERY. Great luck and please let me know how you do. You might try trolling it like St Clair......

A guy I work with Guides on Erie and in the last 10 years he has caught 3 Musky trolling for walleye. I think the largest fish was 36". I also have heard that the smallmouth are moving out into more open water, so they are not just around the islands. I also know of one caught near St. Joe Michigan inside the river, this past spring. It would be great to see a good # of musky, like St Clair, on both Erie and lake Michigan.

Well just talked to a guy who caught a muskie at the mouth of Detroit R. where it spills into Erie. He was fishing for walleye.
