| Received a report from my brother in law that air temps (highs for the day) have been in the 40s for the past couple of weeks, and that spawing of fish has not taken place yet. So..I am looking for any updates on water temps to get a better picture of the situation for next week.
THanks much!! |

I wouuldn't worry, spawning behavior is driven primarily by photoperiod and water temperature. Air temp has little influence on it once the 'trigger has been tripped.' Have fun and enjoy your opener.

Location: Oconto Falls, WI | Not all lakes you find will be the same. Over in the Phelps/Eagle River/Iron River area some lakes the fish haven't spawned in yet. The last two weekends I have seen big females still full of spawn, and smaller fish that aren't even scarred up. The warmest water I have found is 58°. The lake I fished this past weekend was 52°. In recent years I have seen fish spawning into June.

Fish dont eat during the spawn
We release all the fish we catch
SO if you catch a pre-spawn fish, you're going to release it....and if the fish IS on the spawn, she's not going to chase a bait anyways. Being able to fish IL and IN during the spawn I can tell you when you are seeing ONLY fish under 32", you know the spawn is on....ie. the spawners by their nature are safe from us anyways.
Get it? |

Location: north central wisconsin | Been fishing some U.P lakes and the fish have definately spawned where I've been. Popped a 25lber on a big burned bucktail, and had several hits and hookups with topwater. The water was in the sixties for over a week. This cool snap has slowed things a tad, but the fish should be plenty active for the WI opener.
