| Sorry for all the questions, but will muskie surface very often? I see fish surfacing all the time and wounder if muskie will.
On a different note I had my first miss today. I couldn't tell for sure if it was a muskie because the water is chocolate brown but I was using a 6" Jake and what ever it was had a pretty big body. The only thing is it didn't hit very hard. At first I thought I bumbed the bottom twice, then my line moved out and I didn't set very hard. The fish rolled and I got to see it's body and that's it. I was completely focused for the next 2 hours and had to drag myself away because of prior engagements. Thanks for all the help and expect even more questions. |

Location: Oconto Falls, WI | On certain lakes muskies will surface all the time, while on others I have never seen one porpoise.
Next time you feel anything abnormal during your retrieve SET THE HOOK! There is a wide varity of hits you will get while musky fishing, and the best thing to do is set whenever something don't feel right. Usually the bigger fish overtake your lure so there isn't much of a "hit" felt. In fact most of my biggere fish either felt like a "tick", or like someone cut my line. If you feel this reel quick and set hard! |

| Hello Lynn,
The more time you spend out on the water, the more you will probably see this phenomenon.
IMHO, I usually leave that specific area if the fish are up on the surface just grabbing gulpes of air. On the other hand, if there are loud surface explosions when you see muskies doing this, you had better tie on a surface bait, and as quickly as you can. I have seen muskies rolling on the surface in water as cold as 36 degrees. I also dont bother throwing at them when I see them playing on the surface. I have yet to have one hit or follow under those conditions. I think you are better off heading to another favorite location on the lake. Good luck to you this coming season. |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | They sure do surface. Alot! Sue and I were fishing a rock spine on Boom last summer during the Rhinelander Muskie league, and saw at least a dozen seperate fish in a very small area surfacing. No follows, no hits, but all sorts of fish present. We stayed there, even after NWild stopped by and saw a couple of our teasers pop up, and never had a touch all evening. |
