An interesting tidbit regarding the brake pads is posted on the site of our good buds over at R&Hs. The question was, "What is the difference between the different colored brake pads that come with the Ambassadaur baitcaster reels?" (these are the small plastic "barrels" that are installed on the reel, and an extra set is included with each reel) Here's the answer....

I got an answer back from Jammie at Garcia:
"the white blocks slows the spool the most and are used by fishermen that don't use their thumb to control the cast. The Black blocks are medium sized and these are the blocks that most use if they are good with using their thumb to control overrun on a cast. There is a blue set that experienced fishermen use or take them off alltogether. Jammie notes that if the smallest (blue or remove completely) are used, there is potential for more backlashes."

yes, and most of the reels come with the white ones installed for safest casting. Your little bag of goodies with the wrench and lube should have a set of the black ones. They are very easy to change out and unless you don't have much experiance casting with it and want the extra braking, put them on. Make sure they are all the way down towards the axle for re-assembly so they will fit in the brake drum (not sticking out or up).

Ranger,
Are you using the ABEC bearings or the ceramics on your rebuilds? I have about a half dozen ABUs (various sizes/C-series models) that are currently stock and about at the end of their lifespan w/ regard to drag washers and bearings that I would like to tweak a bit. I, like you, enjoy the Dr. Frankenstein aspect of the reel game and Ambassadeurs are mechanically simple enough for me to play with. Also with regard to the drag washers, are you using the smoothies or xtreme smoothies. Is there a big difference between them? Hatteras has a pretty good price on the components, but the rumor mill has the Abu service center pretty easy to work w/ too...

I'm not trying to build a competition casting reel, just a good, servicable fishing reel that will last for at least as long as they originally did w/ stock parts. Thanks.

I used to take the pads off entirely, and had very few problems.

Sorenson - I'm using the ABECs and regular Smooothines. Couldn't make myself shell out the bucks for the best bearings. Been very happy so far, but Tres as Hatterass says the new top-of-the-line Smooothies are the best way to go. When I replace the washers, probably after this season, I'll upgrade at least one or two reels to the better drag washers to see if there is a real big difference. Regular Smooothies wear out after a while, new upgrades ar cleanable and last much longer, says Tres.

Thanks Ranger,
I think I'm gonna try the ABECs and xtreme smooothies on a couple of reels this season, and if I like them, I'll do the switch on the rest.

I've got Xtremes on two of my reels. They are worth the couple bucks difference.
