| Stever, check out the various pics on that whopper; some peeps here are fixing up a "shark trailer/wagon" w/ a fighting chair etc. to do battle this summer. Buddy of mine saw a big mako last week tailing his fish at boatside; said he didn't have anything on board that would prevent spoolage...time to upgrade me own stuff! |

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | I read a bit about that shark on that site, I have to say my favorite part was:
I had my good friend and fishing legend Charles Perry on board the Poacher with me today. We were steaming out past Wimble Shoals in about 120ft of water 13 miles off the Rodanthe beaches when he noticed a small wake.The surface was then broken as a dorsil fin and we both said hammerhead but I noticed some white on the belly and pecks glowing as the fin broke the surface. Now mind you this is 100yds away and the Poacher was making 18kts. I thought it may be a mako so we turned the Poacher towards it to check it out. We started up behind the wake and me and Charles both were in the tower and we started to see something larger and larger until we both said what is it,a big shark or what. Then we pulled along side it and we were flabbergasted,it was a 16ft long, 1800lb-2000lb great white shark! In the image above you can see that it easily is as long as the Poachers complete bowcap! I was mesmerized, I had never seen anything like this shark and thought that I never would! This shark acted as if we were not even there,it was scared of nothing! Seeing this shark swimming freely on the surface without another boat in sight was absolutely one of the most incredible moments that I've ever had on the water! It's really nice to think that we haven't killed everything yet. That the ocean still has some mystery to it and you just never know what you may encounter. We didn't provoke the shark,,poke it,try to kill it,hook it or injure it in any way. The last time we saw it, it was swimming as if it didn't have a care in the world to the West. Only 13 more miles to the West is Mirlo Beach in Rodanthe! Enjoy you swim!

| Hey Shep! Latest week muskies have had lock jaw hard in madtown!! My year has been poopy so far....
The only bad thing about a swallow rig is I don't think rolex's digest very well!

| Good point Slamr; lotta peeps doing catch/release up/down the coast for briny fish. Used to see all kinds of creatures surfing; turtles, jellies, macks, blues, porpoises, fat alberts, and SHARKS. Most were 3-6 ft., but a pal of mine got spun around on his board by a 10-12 hammerhead; he daggone nigh puked right there in the water. Though the chances of gettin' bit are REAL LOW, I personally no longer swim in certain areas in Va/NC because of the amount of finners seen. Couple yrs. ago at least 3 peeps died from attacks(SHALLOW). Most of the sharks that are in the breakers now are of the smaller size, as the water warms the "biters" will arrive. Bull sharks are common, as are black tips, threshers and duskies. Dawn/dusk/night and murky water bring 'em up close. Lotta folks will "yak" a tuna head out past the breakers and head back in to wait for a run. The hurricane last fall made a shallow bar at the point of Cape Hatty stretching over 500yds. out that peeps have been wading to for drum. Been seeing 6 footers in the troughs going out; they just shove them away w/ their rod butt. The older I get the less daring I become; if I can't catch it off the beach, it ain't getting caught! Lot of the locals swim elsewhere also. Daggone cool creatures though, and releasing most of them is the way to go, except for an occasional one to grill, and they taste GREAT! |

Location: NeverNever Lake | Heck,,, them "cheesers" can put up one helluva fight too...... I've dragged more than a few of them out through the doors of the Atlantis than I care to remember!
Wanchesers love to drink and fight, but they're tough and they sure can fish! |
