Anyone know what knot Smitty Baits use on their leaders? This is a good looking knot!

Pick up the tool that DuBro makes for tying floro and hard mono. You can get them at BPS or Rollie and Helens. I think they are $12. That is what they use to make them I believe.

I haven't seen the knot they are using. However, here is a great knot for tying mono or flourocarbon leader to a swivel. It is easy and used a lot for saltwater fishing. Click on the "Offshore Swivel Knot." There are a lot of other useful knots at this site.

Chadster- Really don't know what knot they are tying. You might try a using a "Grip Knot", it's derivative of a "nail knot" - but it requires a tool. I've made my own "Grip Knot tools" ( maybe I'll post some instructions later. > However the Tie-Fast Knot Tyer works great. You will need the Salt Water Model for heavier fluorocarbon/mono. It comes with instructions.

The best price I've seen is from Cortland.

SALTWATER TIE-FAST #650572 new!
The new Saltwater/Big Game TIE-FAST Knot Tyer is the answer to tying perfect knots with heavy hard to use monofilament. Built from 100% stainless steel this unique tool even makes quick work of snelling a 6/0 hook with 120 pound mono! Suggested Retail $6.95

I tie all of our ZaltNAD "No-See-Um" TM Fluorocarbon Leaders with 4-6 wraps depending on the weight of the line. 4 wraps on 130 fluoro is more than enough. I also add a drop of superglue to all my knots.

I started using the Tie-fast tool and the "Grip Knot" before I started using the super lines- Power Pro. Even with superlines no slipping or breaking knots. I haven't had a knot failure in ~ 10 years. Plus using the Tie-Fast Knot Tyer tool makes it's a lot easier tying knots with cold hands.

Bob P. Just tried the "Off Shore Swivel Knot" on some 80lb fluoro. Easy knot to tie, not as pretty as a grip knot. But it's a nice one to know. Good website- Thanks.

Have Fun

Thanks for the insight guys... I know knots are a frequently discussed topic here on this board. I have gone through the archives and have read most of what is out there. I used 60lb hard mono for trolling leaders last year with good success. I tied a trilene knot with 3 wraps and they held up well. This knot was the only knot that I could tie which has two wraps through the eye that didn't have the squigglies (from yielding) above the knot. Over 30 fish in the boat while trolling with not trouble at all.

This year I thought I would experiment with 60 lb fluorocarbon. Sometimes the water I fish can be quite clear. I also thought I would try making my own Fluoro casting leaders.

I am a really big believer in using knots that have two wraps through the eye. The knots I am aware of that have two wraps that you can tie with thicker mono or fluoro are the worlds fair, palomar, and trilene. However, I can't seem to get these knots tied without squigglies with the fuorocarbon. I have tried to lubricate with water and KY jelly.

The knot on the smitty leaders look great (strong and no squigglies), but it looks like only one wrap through the eye.

Do you guys know if I can make two wraps through the eye with the tools that you are recommending? Not clear on how these work without playing with them...

Thanks.

Chadster- Yes, it works with the grip knot and the Tie-Fast Knot Tyer. I just tied a 16" crank bait leader w/ 80 lb fluoro and double wrapped through the swivel & snap. It's little harder to tighten up verus standard grip knot.

The "Offshore Swivel Knot" that Bob P. posted a link for above, also has double wraps through the eye. It's not as pretty as the grip knot and you don't need a tool to tie it. But I think it will get the job done in a pinch. It's also not as easy to tighten as the grip knot and it did need lubrication (spit) to tighten it completely. I tied 5 of them w/ 80lb fluoro to get a feel for the knot.

However, I think I'll stick with the grip knot. One strong point for the grip knot is that it really doesn't need lubrication to tighten it down, even with 130lb fluoro.

Have Fun!
