| Will soon go the way of local grocery sttores....
In personal dealings with local shops and big box retailers I see something happening. Please remember your local guys when needing bait, a special lure or a local friendly face.
Nothing wrong with the big guys at all. Great people work for them as well and very knowledgable individuals in some cases.
When buying a big box item they are perfect.
Just an opinion.
Have a good season!

Location: Racine, Wi | I agree with you fully Thick and Wrinkly!!
There is a local shop in town that is worried, as there is a Cabelas and Gander Mountain proposed right down the road.
Give them your support when you can guys.

While big stores are great , theres alot to knowing the people you're dealing with
and watching them do well ! Some favorites from my past :Caps in Tonawanda,NY ,
Cabin Fever in Victoria,Mn ,Riverside Sports in Geneva,Illinois , Ed Shirleys in
La Grange ,Illinois . What made them good was the people working there !
Good season to all ! |

| In the West of Chicagoland my two stopping points are Kolar's & WaterWerks II usually in that order. Both friendly and helpful places. |

Location: Chicago, Beverly | Local shops are the only way to shop. The Ed Shirley chain of stores, Henry's, Fishing Connection all in IL. Number 1 Stop and Ye Old Tackle in Indiana. Always liked Indianhead Sports in Eau Claire,Wisconsin.. was too bad when they closed. Not sure but always wondered if Gander helped that one close.. Walmart/Kmart/BPS/Cabelas/Gander may be cheaper on some baits because they buy in way higher quantities then your local shop. But I'd rather spend that extra buck for a little extra service.. I will say some guys at Gander do know their stuff and are helpfull.. just don't do specials orders with them.. at least the merriville store..lol.. never have had a problem with special orders at the little local stores... |

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | I always try to support the local guy.
Smokey's Muskie Shop is my go to tackle shop.
I will go to Gander oir Mills Fleet Farm for quantity if I need to stock up on something or see a sale, like the Storm Thundersticks going for $3.19 last weekend. Yes, the old ones !!!
Culvers Bait Shop in down town Pewaukee is hard to beat when looking for bait. The best price and quality bait that lasts. He is one of the little guys that I like to get my live bait from.
I always say: "Help the guy that helps you." |

Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota | Thorne Brothers has always treaded me well. Unless it is an issue of time, I will almost always go there before going to a large chain.

| What a topic! This is very true, it is difficult to be an indepedant in ANY industry. I was born in the baitshop my family built. Now the new owners see differences from the big box I now work for. An independant just shut down to come to work for us. He now leaves his work at work, knows his upcoming income and has insurance for his family. He is very pleased with the descision. I hope all can co-exist. Any oppertunity for a person to live their dream is a good thing. I thank everyone for their support in both. I hope as an employee of a big box, we can always supply you with everything you need.

Location: Genoa City, WI | Having worked many facets of the fishing retail industry, I understand, sympathize where the independent retailers are coming from. I guess since now that my career has a good turn and my main focus IS the indy dealer, I thank you all for still supporting them in any way possible.
Thanks!!!!
