I was wondering how many people have used the Mud Puppy Top Water bait?

Picked us a few of them and they look like a nice top water bait. I see they come in a few different sizes and even have a model that the hooks pull free from so you can fight the fish with out the bait attached. Ya, then you would have to pick up the bait and set it up for the next fish.

Very nice idea, fight the fish with only the hooks, not the weight of the bait.

This seems like a Tallywacker but has a flat angled front instead of a point. This would let the bait swim a bit or cause some erratic action as it goes froward.

I like what I see. Season is not open yet around here, don't want to get caught tossin topwater yet.

Any input on these baits. I see they have caught lots of muskie in the past. It might be time for a comeback.

Who has used the Mud Puppy Top Water baits?

What tips should I know about them?

Mike,
That's a blast from the past. My very first topwater musky was caught on a mudpuppy. Lost the bait many years ago, never replaced it. It is a good tail rotator bait, nothing fancy that I can remember about it. I may just have to add one back into the arsenal just for nostalgia.

I also caught my first topwater muskie on a mud puppy some 35 years ago. Used them for a long time after that but started getting away from them when baits with better hook hangers started to come down the pike. While one could beef up the forward and middle hook hangers, I could never figure out a way to prevent the rear hook hanger from opening up. That said, I never lost a fish due to the bait falling apart; it just made me nervous. One other thing about the mud puppy: CC Roberts is one of the few surface bait-makers out there that understands the importance of minimizing the distance between the main body of the bait and the rotating tail. By keeping that distance to a minimum CC Roberts makes a bait whose shaft will never bend as the result of an encounter with a toothy critter. The only other mainstream manufacturer I'm aware of that designs their tail-rotating topwaters this way is Bucher. Good luck.

I had 2 of them at the Milwaukee swap. One ended up in JoMusky's lot, and the other I gave away. I think it cost me a drink to get rid of. I used them a little, but never did anything on them. Then I picked up a T-Wacker, and caught my first top water fish. Then the Top Raider came out, and I quit using the T-Wacker. Now I have some Pacemakers. Will my favorite busted up Top Raiders get retired? Only time, and the muskies will tell.

Blast from the Past is right. I, too, caught my first topwater fish on this about 25 years ago. I used it occasionally for probably 10 years--always had a great "squeak". Eventually it got beat up, waterlogged, lost at the bottom of the box, never got a replacement and eventually the tired creature ended up in the "land of the lost" in the darkest corner of my basement.

Have several >30 years old. They are a very subdued variation of the TW. They seem to ride quite low in the water and don't throw a lot of water, more of a plop sound. Had good luck many years ago, but didn't last long, the paint always cracked and they became quite waterlogged. The detachable hook variation seemed like a good idea but it always seemed the fish grabbed the bait hard enough that the hooks stayed put. I did send one flying on a backlash so I know they do release! The solid hook ones had a problem with the rear hook tangling with the prop, always took some mods to cure this. Good calm water bait, bot seemed to ride too low for rougher water.

Great bait that seems to get lost in the myriad of topwaters available today. As Ghoti stated, it's a much more subtle bait than other tail baits.I'd use it in some of the same situations I may throw a flaptail.Slow methodical retrieve. We've actually had a few fish chase topwaters down here this past week. Can't wait til June! Steve

ive got a couple of em. the breakaway model seems a good idea but it took a while to find the bait in the dark after it flew off on a backlash...lol. it is definitely a calm water bait, a real subtle plop as previously stated. the single prop model{one piece} barely makes any sound at all{didnt like} and the hook hangers do make ya worry a bit...if ya try one, get the one with double props but hopefully they make it in a one piece body? i think they do...?

Have caught 2 nice fish in stained water when every else did not work. Short to subtle bursts of quick retreive can sometimes work well with this lure. It has such a low profile that is easily pulled through the water. I know of a gentleman that has fished the Chip flowage for over 50+ years and that is what he has caught over 500 muskies on the river model that releases the body. Ben

I used them for years until the newer, louder tail rotating baits appeared. Brian Major introduced me to the bait on Sabaskong bay.
