My Dad and I are heading up to Sabaskong Bay Lodge on LOTW for the opener. This will be are first trip to LOTW and are very excited to try our luck on the best Muskie Lake in the world. Just wondering what people are throwing that time of the year on LOTW. Thanks for all the help.

The first thing you need to do is get Dick Pearson's book, Muskies on the shield. http://www.shieldmuskies.bigstep.com/item.html;$sessionid$ADHGWFAAA... You will also want a good map, the resort should have them, if not, Thorne brothers does. http://www.thornebros.com/ Sabaskong bay is map no. 6214. Study the map, look for the structures Dick talks about in the book, and consider hiring a guide for a day or two.

As for lures, spinnerbaits, bucktails, and topwaters will take you far. Jerkbaits and crankbaits can be good also. Good luck, I am sure you will enjoy it, it is a magic place.

Last fall when we were there the water levels were some four feet below normal pool. I highly recommend getting a navigational map as suggested, not just the Hot Spot map. There are numerous opportunities to leave your outboard's lower unit behind due to the large number of rock reefs and humps. Do not cut short around tips of islands, give them all wide berth. Study the map before proceding from one place to another, look for shallow waters and avoid. If you are a Muskie, Inc. member, study the Lunge Log, you'll find that any lure works as long as it has hair and it is black! Be careful up there and you'll have a good trip. m

I have been going to Sabaskong camp for about three years. I have talked to Grant and they have maps on order. They currently have old ones on hand but all the channel markers have been renumbered and the new maps will reflect this. They expect to have them before opening.

You will love it up there.
We seemed to have a lot more luck away from the main shores, especially on islands of rock and rock structure throughout Sab Bay.
Make sure you bring a few Top Raiders, the color everyone wished they had in August was blackbird. Black with Chartreuse was a worthy substitute.
Also, fish around Cedar Island, the home of Sab Bay Lodge. I watched Mauser catch 3 nice fish off the shore of the island, all using spinnerbaits. We also had a lot of luck around the camp to the northeast, its Island is next to a really big roack formation which held some BIG fish.
We also raised fish on these lures: Magic Maker in perch, Top Raider in Baby loon, Hawg Wobbler black, and topper stopper in black with chartruese blades, which got pummelled mercilessly.
Good luck,
Papa Joe

I live on Sabaskong Bay for 4 months each summer. The lake is currently within normal depth range. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR MAPS!!!! I hit three reefs last year and I have fished this lake for over 50 years. Early in the season I found the Buchertail 500 series with flame blade and dark hair to be extremely productive for me. The nickle/black combination worked well also. It seemed the fish were on the rocks right from the beginning of the season. Weed development was slow to start last year. You will fall in love with this lake. The folks at Sabaskong Bay Lodge have done a marvelous job bringing that camp back to where it is. I fish the area around Cedar Island frequently. There are plenty of good structures to fish within 3-4 miles. Enough to keep you busy during your whole stay. You don't need to go much further on your first trip. There are a lot of muskies in Sabaskong and many over 50". You have a decent shot at one this year. I get up there about May 15th. Drop me an email and I'll send you my Canadian phone number. Perhap I can help mark up a map for you. By the way, all the advice given by the folks here is right on target. Especially about Dick Pearson's book. It is absolutely the best primer on LOTW fishing I have ever seen. Good Luck.
