Do you work into the wind or with the wind while fishing?

On underfished lakes I like to fish into the wind at all times for best boat control.

On lakes that get pounded I like to use the wind and try to be quiet as can be.

Any thought on this subject?

Tell us why you prefer one or the other.

Good question that I'd have to answer in 2 parts.

I like to fish into the wind when fishing humps, reefs or lake structure.....fish will face into the wind in these cases and I want to cast and retrieve to the fish rather than pull the bait away from them. bait fish will blow over the tops of humps and reefs, musky (alot like walleye) will wait for easy pickens!

I fish with the wind when drifting weed flats.

I like to pull the boat into the wind. Wind creates current and current positions the fish. So the lures are presented properly when pulling into the wind. I also think it depends on structure. Each case is different. Shoreline wind blown structure I think you should pull into the wind. Big open water stretches I don't think it matters as much.

About 60% of the time into the wind and 40% crosswind. I can't beleive more people don't fish across the wind, fishing windblown structure. It is way to hard for me to control the boat with any type of speed control or accuracy when going with the wind.

I like to point the nose of the Lund directly into the wind. Even if you fishing a weedbed/rock pile, and the wind is blowing directly acrossed it, I stilll like to point the nose into the wind.

I guess it all depends also on what kind of wind are you talking about. 3-5 mph, either or. 10-20 mph, into the wind.

Nothing better than a nice controlled drift where all you have to do is fish. I hate working the motor up front. I'd rather cast off the back. Call it lazy or whatever but I'd rather be the client than the guide. Better yet, electric from the back and give me the first casts off the front
I agree however if the wind is strong enough to creat any current I'll probably be pulling into it and casting into it at an angle.

It seems if there is any wind when I am fishing it's a big wind. You have to point the nose of the boat into it. If it's a cross wind you have to zig-zag your boat along where you want to fish. The only time I would go with the wind is to drift.

I drift with the wind whenever possible, with minimal use of my trolling motor.
The Pewaukee Lake Muskie Study showed that radio tracked muskies definitely responded to outboard motor activity negatively, and there was some evidence that they responded to trolling motors as well.
However, nothing is absolute, but when there is the opportunity to use the wind, I take it!

Most of the time I will be heading into the wind, much better boat control and I can cover the spot best that way. If I want to fish a new and large area I may use the wind to take a quick pass looking for active fish. One thing heading into the wind does is allow you to slow down to a crawl when you get to the spot on the spot and lets you fish every square inch of it. You can also fish a spot twice without repositioning the boat, you just need to power the trolling motor down and back yourself through the area again. naturaly I use an Autopilot to help me with the boat control in the wind.

In general Ill fish into the wind for boat control; However I like to make a pass with the wind before leaving an area.It just seems at times Ill pick up a fish doing that.I love using a drift bag and going with the wind on very windy days. I think the bags are underutilized. They can really make a presentation difference for many situations.Lots of ways to deploy them and have found that for suspended or deep fishing a small offshore peice of structure they are priceless.

For ultimate control on very irregular structure I like into the wind. On the not to breezy days I like to drift and take a shotgun approach. It really depends on wind speed and structure being fished and how lazy I am!

I fish into the wind more often than not. I get better control of the boat and get more casts for my buck. Yep it can sure be a pain but it pays off! Off the front of my boat I have more than a 200 degree swing to throw baits, angles...... what a great thing!

Depends on how much gas I got left in the tank, and how far froms the dock I is; by allowing the wind to blow you around, you're able to cover more water...if the wind blows so hard I end up on the bank, I jump out the boat and act like I'm looking for something, as if it were an intentional grounding. W/ the wide varieties listed in this post, it would take a month of Sundays to try them all out. If the seas are angry that day, I like to put the wife up front dressed in a Gorton fisherman rain suit and have her watch for obstacles. This is what we do on our summer vacation...

I'm sure glad you back Sponge...

Mike,

Most of the time I work into the wind, just a heck of allot easier to position the boat.

Most people seem to like working into the wind, I too work the front of the boat into the wind to cover structure slower and better.

Let me ask you something else:

Do you think trolling motor or kicker motor noise affects your fishing at all?

Pewaukee Lake study showed fish were spooky of trolling motors.

Ralph "Beeper" said the transmitter fish would move away as he snuck up on the fish with his small 2 stroke, he even used the trolling motor to sneak up closer and they still were spooky.

This leads me to believe that if I fish into the wind all the time I might be hurting my chances at times.

Drifting with the wind and occationally bumping back into position would give me a stealthy approach but structure control is much harder.

Any comments on spooky fish / conditioned fish and trolling motors?

I think the advantages of precise boat control far outweigh any negative effect you may have from TM noise. If your fishing where they aint or moving to fast to cover half of the water you are not giving yourself any chance at those fish. I have seen enough fish run all around a running trolling motor to ease my mind of the fear of spooking them.

Just a side thought here. Could the fish that spooked from TM noise be in a very negative mood anyway and virtually uncatchable?
