Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | Fence is a big clear diffcult place to fish Musky. It's average depth is about 40 feet with the deepest spot about 90 feet. I've had success early in the season with natural colored spinners and cranks, but I've never gotten anything to move after July, probally because fish move to deeper weededges and drops.
Good largemouth and pike fishery too, would make for a good family vacation lake.
If there was motor trolling up there, this would be the lake to do it on.

Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | Do you have your heart set LDF? The problem is, that if you've never fished it, it's so damn big you could waste your whole trip just cruising around.
If you're looking for more fertile waters up twords Land O Lakes, drop me a line. I could give you some lodging and lake info for up there. |

Location: Tomahawk, Wisconsin | I spend some time out on the chain in the spring and more time in the late fall. Yes it's deep and clear but some of the lakes have some pretty decent weed beds that aren't in 50 feet of water!!! Downed timber along the shorelines and rock bars are pretty good spots to try day or night!! You are not going to score lots of fish but they are available! Best of luck!! |

Location: Downers Grove, IL |
We're not set on Fence Lake. We just found a nice house on it for rent for our group (4 adults/4 small kids). I'm becoming gun shy of it having seen the posts. My wife wants to be near Minocqua to shop, and keep the kids entertained while I don't want to be on the Minocqua chain fighting traffic. I thought the LDF chain was a good happy medium - however, I welcome any advice. Thanks again

Jeff

|

| Never fished it before in my life.BUT, if you're "locked in", make the best of your time.Get a map.Where do they spawn? When are you going?Cisco and smelt.Hmmm.Where are they the time you'll be there.Prepare and succeed.Talk to people.Fish at night.Hire a guide. An investment in your future.Enjoy the vacation with the family with a shot at a real superfish.Have fun! Don't forget topwater over deep/clear water. |

Location: Germantown, WI | i like this chain of lakes alot. i think it would be a great place to buy a house. fence is a tougher lake to fish, i prefer flambeau, crawling stone and don't overlook pokegama. i have caught some really nice smallmouth on fence, good size northern and walleye on flambeau and pokegama. if your after larger muskies, they are in this chain.
word of caution, be careful out of the channel coming into fence! just when it looks like it starts to get deeper, it doesn't, just rocky! |

| My father -in-law has a rental on Fence and a multi-rental in Long interlochen though I have not spent alot of time fishing the lakes they are tough especially Fence deep and clear and barely any structure. If you are looking for people to talk with about the chain Doug Smith who guides out of Rollie and Helens spends a ton of time on it . Also you might want to post on Musky Hunter Jim Saric used to spend alot of time on the chain also good luck Shane |

Location: Presque Isle Wisconsin | The LDF Chain is one of the premiere trophy muskie chains in Wisconsin.Fence lake has superb structural elements including deep humps, sandbars, weeds, shoreline points and an open water suspended fishery second to none.Huge tigers are available on the shallower sand bars-I like natural colored very large spinner baits for these-,and monster muskies that haunt the deep rock humps -I prefer using soft plastics in natural patterns for these-. Night fishing can be extremely productive on fence off the shoreline points and weed beds.
Other lakes on the chain ,such as Flambeau,Offer large great quality cabbage weed beds that drop off fast into deep water and usually always hold some Big fish. Flambeau is relatively easy to fish and had produced#50lb fish. Dont miss it !!
Long Interlochen is a trophy sleeper That also contains quality weeds and some of my favorite smaller size deep humps that hold very big fish. One of my clients lost a monster fish on this lake last year that would have gone at least 55".
Pokegama,Big and Little Crawling Stone, all contain huge Muskies and the entire chain could be considered underfished if one considers the amount of "INTELLIGENT" pressure one sees out there. Its not hard to find quality areas to fish even if you havnt been on the chain before. I wouldnt be talked out of considering it if you have a modicum of Muskie fishing experience and can change tactics effectively based on conditions. |

Location: Rhinelander, WI | I wouldn’t be afraid of Fence if it has other items that are drawing you. Just expect that it is trophy water, you may not catch numbers, but you could get a hawg.
I think the most important thing you could do is hire a guide, if you can’t hire a full day at least go a half day early in your trip with the guide. Be sure to keep in mind the time of day you will be able to fish when hiring the guide because you most likely want to learn spots that are good when you are able to fish them. If you hire a guide and you fish with him in the evening, but you can’t fish any other evenings because of family concerns then what you do with the guide may not be applicable to the rest of your trip.
Another thing you could try and do is hire a guide for half a day, to learn the lake you are staying at and then later in your trip hire a guide for another half day to get some action. Let the guide pick the time of day and the lake for your best chance at a fish. Could be the best of both worlds.
Good luck.

| A great chain to have a cottage on if you like to unravel a lakes secrets. If you want action with no effort then maybe go elsewhere.
You will need to spend lots of time exploring to find those magical spots. The first year I'd hire 3 differant guides, one for early patterns, one mid-summer, and one for fall. Lots of water with real trophy potential.
You put your time on the water and you'll be onto some big fish.
