I'm just getting into making some homemade tackle and I'm having some problems with tie bucktail. First, I would like to tie directly to the bucktail shaft instead of to the hook. Just incase need to replace the hook. I've read everything I could get ahold of about bucktail tying. My problem is when I tie on the hair in 2-3 bunches most of it falls out. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to let it dry between bunches ? Any help will be appreciated.

First of all, I don't tie directly to the shaft....if that's what you mean...you tie on tubing or a coil. When you tie on the bucktail, put down a layer of thread first, this gives the hair something soft to be pulled down on. When putting on the hair, don't be in a hurry. Lots of small sections will stay in place better than trying to smash on one large one. I usually will put on each color layer in 3 or 4 sections then finish it off.
If you would like, I'll send you one of mine to disect. Take it apart and look at how it was assembled, then you can make your own adjustments as you would like to.

Your right, I'm trying to tie to the shaft. I told you I was a greenhorn. What type of tubing? Would heat shrink tubing work?

The coil around an old choke cable works also. However the very best that I have found, and I hope some of my freinds don't get mad at me for letting this out, is bicycle spoke nipples. They have a tapered, flared end to tie against and when you tighten the last wrap or two on the hair it tends to "bush out" extremely well. You can also leave one of the bicycle spokes protruding out of the end of the nipple to clamp your vise onto so as to make the tying that much easier. When finished, just unscrew the spoke from the nipple and you are ready to slide the tied bush onto your bucktail wire. You can pick up spoke nipples at any bike shop. Ask for used spokes as most of the shops just throw them away anyway.

Another great bucktail tube material is choke 'spring', the spring like housing the choke cable goes through. The grooves in the spring allow for the hair to be crimped in a bit, and really holds the stuff well.
