Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Gary Richard caught the heaviest fish ever taken at a MuskieFIRST outing today at the Cave!! He was fishing a Trap in shallow water when the huge fish hit. Total weight in the net less the net poundage was about 38#, and the fish length was 51". What a PIG!!
We enjoyed a tremendous spread for the Awards Banquet sponsored by Morehead Tourism and Crash's Landing. Crash was under the weather, but Justin was at the banquet. Can't thank you enough, sir! Everyone tells me Tony really did a great job with his get together Thursday, MAN I wish I could have been here for the entire outing!!! This area REALLY knows how to welcome a group of anglers! Friendly folks, great fishing, and beatutiful scenery, Cave Run is a great place to go for a Muskie trip!!
Steve Jonesi doubled to take second, and TECK doubled to take third just two points behind Steve. This was a great trip. If you missed it because of an excuse, you REALLY should be sure to make next year's spring trip here!! Overall, the group took 16 legal fish, with Gary's the largest.
Matt took me out for a couple hours shooting pictures. He was HOT on Saturday catching 4 fish, but couldn't make the entire outing or the final registration. Matt, I had a great time out there, see you in Rhinelander this summer.
Mikie got a fish, Kly kept his string going, and Punch and Judy got a bit more aclimated to the new Crestliner. Mauser looked pretty rough yesterday; CJ, you take care of that broken neck, and heal up quick! Pappa Joe wore 'THE HAT!!' and was a great addition this year to the crew ( glad you could make it!!) TECK and Murph! strained the waters and caught some fish,RAZE1 and Artie were MIA, Steve Jonesi had a roving band of hooligans in the boat, David F. was looking sharp in his MuskieFIRST hat, and caught a fish to boot--plus he brought a guest who HAD to be wondering what he got into by Mid Day Saturday; some of the crew were quiet as could be, but fished VERY hard. I missed Sponger, jess 'aint th' same w'out ya, Sponge!!
Gary took first, biggest fish, and the SPONGE plate traveling trophy for Top Gun. His 51 was a personal best, so he was VERY happy with the fish!
I actually am sorry I have to head back tomorrow.....

Location: Kentucky | I got there a little late and had to leave early, but I just got home from the Cave. I'm only an hour away, so it wasn't a long haul. Anyway, I would just like to thank MuskieFirst for a great outing. Steve, it was an honor meeting you and you have done an awesome job of covering the event. I would also like to say thank you to Morehead Tourism, Crash's Landing, and The Mountain Muskie Lodge for helping put on a great outing. We had some mighty fine eating tonight and we also received some awesome bait's. Thank's again to everyone that helped put this outing together. As for the fishing, the trap bite was definetly on. I got a 34 incher yesterday, and I thought I was doing something. LOL Until I come in this evening and seen that big fat pig of a Musky! That was a true FATTY! Congratulation's, Gary. I hope you guy's get another one tomorrow. Wish I could have stayed. It was nice to meet all of you, and I will see you next year for sure. cpr Chris

| Congrats guys on a great outing! Do any of the anglers have details of their personal trip to the cave, i.e., follows, fish boated or missed, where and on what baits, etc? Water temps? Clarity? Weather factors down there, etc. Any details would be helpful! Thanks.

Location: Athens, Ohio | What an awesome fish. I really need to thank Crash's Landing, Morehead Tourism, and Steve Worral for putting on such a great time for us. We had all kinds of weather, Wednesday was cold and windy, by Friday the air and waters were warming a bit. Unsettled and stormy Saturday. Really a bunch of fine folks that come out for these. Great to see Judy and Punch again, Papa Joe I gotta thank you for driving all the way down here just to show that you can pull fish out of just about any place! Jonsi and Kly fishing with Tomy V was a sight to behold for sure. A Special thanks to Tony Grant, sorry ya had to leave so soon, accomodations were outstanding as usual. m |

Location: Zelienople, Pa | I just got back home and I don't think every thing has set in yet, Thanks to everyone for the great time at the cave, this was the first time at a Muskie First outting, and beleive me it won't be the last. I have the great honor to carry the sponge plate till next year. At least everyone told me that over a couple of beers. Its looks like those trips to Harrisburg, and Columbus to hear Tony Grant speak paid off, throw shallow, reel fast and use a 1oz fire tiger rattle bait. See you at the Pittsburgh show.
l would like to thank Rich W. who reminded me to take the sunglasses off, remove my hat, smile for the camera, and don't drop that hog.

| Wow! What a blast!Just got home an hourt or so ago and am still pumped about the Cave.It was great to meet so many MuskieFirst guys and as others have said , a big thanks goes out to all involved in putting on the event .I want to personally thank Steve for his efforts and Tony Grant for his tips on location etc..I wish I had a tape recorder in the boat. There were times my face hurt from laughing so hard. To KLY and TommyV,my partners in crime, thanks for making the outing such a "goat rodeo"!Can't forget "screamin" Kenny" bringing up the rear. I think some folks thought we were nuts(we are) to fish 4 out of the FFD(fiberglass floating dock). We had no mishaps except for the 687 snags, which is inevitable on that pond. The 620 got a workout , but came through w/ flying colors. The trolling motor, I'm not so sure about.Just need a new prop and to bend the shaft a little. No big deal.I'll be fishing there again for sure. The lake is awesome and I want to see what it looks like w/eaves on the trees.Way tired , I'll finish tomorrow. Steve |

Location: Southwest PA | A big Thank you to Crash's Landing, Comfort Inn, Morehead Rowan County Tourism, and Tony Grant, and all the guys at MuskieFirst that put this together! I dont want to foget to thank the bait manufactures that supplied the baits the were given away Saturday night.
I had a blast, but then who wouldnt when you get to a chance to be the netman/cameraman for a 51" muskie.
It was fun to finally put a face with some of the names. I hope that a November outing to "The Cave" can get put together. I'm up for going back before next March, I dont think I'll need to twist Gary's arm to hard to get him to go back down.
Thanks again to all involved in making this happen.

| Had a great time at the outing on the cave this past weekend. Met some nice folks and caught a few fish as well. Sorry I could not make the banquet but I had to get home that night and it would have been to late to leave after. Congrats on a pig fish, incidentally almost all of my fish also came on a 1ox fire tiger trap. |

How about some details about conditions? What were water temps? Were fish coming out of the deep? Shallow? Mixed?

Location: Washington, PA | Water temps were between 45-50 degrees. Fish were coming from shallow spots, we tried casting the depths to no avail. |
|
|
|
| All the fish I boated over the weekend came out of two feet of water or less on rattle baits and gliders. Finding the warmest water was the key and when the warmest water was located, so were multiple fish on the same spots. Later in the day wwhen the water warmed produced the best action for me. |

Location: Athens, Ohio | Ah, yes, the memories. My first fish at Cave Run after a long time trying. I'm surprised Mauser sitll fishes with me after my boat dumped a three foot wave in his lap at the turn to Alfry ramp.
Does anyone have archived the photo we took at the first Cave Riun outing in Tony's shop? I know hte pic was not well lit (we were!), but it is still a classic and I lost my copy when my hard drive crashed.
I'll gladly trade for a couple photos of the Sponge. m |
