| Man, O Man, it never ceases to amaze me of how unethical and lacking of sportsman etiquete some people have. Now I know I''m just asking for trouble when hunting public land, but isn''t there at least some respect for someone else''s space. The last two years I''ve had guys walk within 100 yards of me and sit there while they can plainly see that I''m facing their direction, hunting the ridge and scrape line that they are sitting on. This public land is about a couple thousand acres in size. Wouldn''t you think that the only other guy that was out there would be able to find a spot?
Not only that but it''s more unsafe than anything. I hate to see what would have happen if a deer went between us both. Of course he was quartering downwind of me just along the deer trail...so he was cutting me off at the knees. The only thing I could do was climb back down from the tree and hike it back to the truck. I was pretty disgusted and may just hang up deer hunting all together. Sick and tired of fighting with ignorant people. The sad part it usually doesn''t end there. I get cut off more times fishing also, but at least you can move easily to another spot and be productive. I wish hunting could be just as convenient but it isn''t.
Sometimes it seems to me that some of these guys must be plain lazy and not scout out some spots for themselves. It''s almost that panfisherman mentality in which they say to themselves. "Hey look there''s a guy sitting over there... that must be the spot to be."
P.S. I forgot to mention that I was in the spot way before him. (He moved in about 2 1/2 hours after me). I also know I don''t own the woods, but I would have been less upset if he would have walked straight through and set up where I couldn''t see him.
I must be that darn good looking that everyone must be so close to me!!!he,he,he....Not[:p]

| Dude! Know exactly how you feel....had a guy climb a fence here behind the house last year + sit down w/ his back to me w/in 22 yds......I stepped it off! I was hunting some land an old fellow owns that lives behind me. I COULD NOT believe it....he sat for a half hr. or so then plodded off...I was in my tree stand on a waterline + started to shoot my muzzleloader in the air; whistled at him but he just looked around...he knows where my stand is now as I saw him later + let him know how dangerous/stupid he was....saw him 2 times this year + he walks up + down an old road bed on the other side of the fence but can't sit still....not much I can say but you would think people would be more considerate + he has never shot a deer + it is obvious why! Great thing is I busted a doe for meat w/in 5 minutes after he left + freaked him out. Sat. some guy walked up an old road bed to the left of my stand + wandered up the hill in front of me; he had parked his truck in front of the gate + was probably trespassing. Brother + I were hunting on public property a few years ago + a guy came w/in 50 yds. of him + the idiot started rattling before daylight! My brother whistled at him + flipped his light at him several times but the guy kept going off + on as it became daylight.....finally bro stood up + walked w/in 20 yrds of the guys tree + took a whizz, all the time telling him what an idiot he was + still hunted his way up to me. We went back later that afternoon + the guy was gone; brother had told him if he was there when he got back they'd lean their guns against a tree + settle things! He is normally laid back but it sems we now have "forest rage" to go along w/ the other groups...I seen it on crowded trout streams + even at the coast. It is EXTREMELY aggravating to find a spot + do you homework only to have someone slid in opening day. If getting out in the woods wasn't so theraputic for me I'd hang it up too but I can't let it go! Anyway I may look for a small parcel of land to buy where at least I'll have a LITTLE breathing room....[:(] [:sun:] | |

| It can be just like that fishing. One time two guys were fishing for muskies out of a canoe and there were right in my path, so i turned shallower and was out of range where they were casting, then they decided it would be fun to cast farther and catch my lines. Then they had to be dumb ***es about it and say, "oh i caught your line" Then there was another dumb *** that was using an electric along the lily pad line slowly while casting, and as i went past trolling trying to pass him he sped up and went right towards me. I told him to turn off his motor cause he might have my line, he acted stupid and said, "What?" Luckily I reeled them in and they stayed deep enough. And I won't even start with bass fishers... | |

| I bought 260 acrs a few years ago to avoid the mess of public land, and spent the last several years having trespassers arrested...I thought a warning would work, But NOOOO< they simply try to get around me and sneak in a different way...Wouldn't mind if JUST ONE would ask, but NOOO<<<< Venting a but, myself!!
Have passed 5 bucks so far; forks and sixes,( 'cept one poor 31/2 with a half rack) too warm!! Tomorrow the temps drop, we will see if that gets the big boys moving around some more.[:blackeye:]

| That's why I don't hunt anymore. All my private spots are now in city limits, developed or backstabbed out of. Public land is all that's left for me and it's too risky. I have a buddy who hunts it. When he is deer hunting there are people driving deer, sitting on the ground and trees and you have no idea if someone is in your line of fire or not. He has been sprayed with shot on numerous occaisons upland game hunting and had skybusters screw up the waterfowl he was calling in. Nobody will give you permission to hunt in my area. It's just not worth it.
I was fishing the "zoo" this weekend and had two boats go between me and shore when they could have easily gone around and another that changed course when I casted at his boat. I casted at the other two but they did not get it.[:blackeye:]

| I can relate...opening day I got into a pissin' match with a punka$$ teenager. Had everything I could do to keep from bi***slapping him.
I'm hunting private land -40 acres. It's got another 40 in front and another 120 behind, that no one is allowed to hunt, and then has the Necedah Wildlife Refuge on both sides. I was in my tree stand at 6:25 a.m. I'm hunting a line fence on the back edge. Now during the day, there's a couple guys that walk out of the public land and stand there looking longingly at the open field near me. I cough, they see me and walk away. About 1:30 this little $h1t walks over the fence line onto my property and stands there. Again, I cough politely...twice. After 20 minutes I ask him if he's gonna stand there all afternoon or what. I get "What the %&*$* $*&$(&__ **$^$ (((%& you gonnna #*%% do about it." To make a long story short I give it back to him and tell him to get back on the public land. He wants me to come down and take care of it now. I told him I'd just grab his back tag number and let the sheriff's dept. handle it. Well, then he tells me he doesn't have to listen to me and if the property owner wants him off he can come and kick him off. I scope him with the binocs, see it's junior with an attitude and get flipped off etc with more swearing. To make a longer story short he did move 4 feet and cross the fence line again. He stands there 45 mins, smokes a cig and tries to stare me down. He tells me straight up that he'll stand there the rest of the day and make sure I don't get a deer. And, best of all he'll have his "old man" meet me at the access road and "kick my a$$". Well, there wasn't anyone there at the access road and I did look for the kid while driving back out to the highway. I thought that dad may want to hear what happened. The kid never turned around so I never did get a back tag number either. Definitely not why I go hunting....
On Sunday I found a guy in the woods, tell him it's private, he apologizes and leaves. Couldn't have been nicer.
End result, I don't even know why I hunt any more either. 2 days in the woods, saw two bucks and let both walk, saw 15 does and no T zone there. I've got one from bow season so I am set for the year for meat. I was horn hunting anyway.
I am currently working on trying to find some land close to home for my wife, I and two daughters. If I can I am set. No more travelling all over for a place to hunt and no more fighting with a$$holes in the woods.
Good Luck, Be Safe,

| I have hunted public land virtually my entire life. I never had the luxury of owning land in the family or having a relative who owns land to hunt on. I have had some great deer hunts in the Nicolet National Forest, and some real bad ones too. Seems to me the bad hunts have been happening with greater frequency lately. I have given this a lot of thought and here are my reasons why things are getting worse for those of us who hunt public lands.
1). Bait Pile Warfare- So many hunters here in the Eagle River area now rely on the "magical" corn/apple pile to fill their tags. This creates serious hunter conflicts, including the "this is my area cuz I'm baiting around here!" type arguments. I have seen this first hand! Also, the deer turn nocturnal because they realize that they can eat a buffet dinner under the cloak of darkness and be safe! They don't move on their normal travel patterns at first light or dusk, they simply don't have to. You actually have hunters up here trying to outbait the other guy! Its ridiculous! My suggestion is to simply eliminate the baiting and you eliminate these "bait pile heroes" and the issues that come with baiting. I also think the competition thing is hurting us, as in "I have to out do the other guy!" mentality.
2). The other big issue is there are simply more and more people hunting public areas now. The best way I have found to deal with hunting pressure is to do your homework and scout and look for areas that the average hunter will not go to. Even if it means crossing a stream or wading through a swamp to get away form people. This is what the deer do, and you'll find success if you do your homework! I have shot a couple of nice bucks in this manner, although the drags are always tough!
Just my thoughts on this issue. Headed to the Nicolet this weekend.
Good luck!
Tom

| Short standed again this morning....basically the same thing that happened to Scott....screwball walks down the fence line + is about 40 yds. from my treestand + gets ready to cross the fence...I whistle + he stops.....fires up a stogie + spends about 20 minutes before wandering off....soon a big doe stops about 15 yds. from the treestand but the buck stops in the woods + I can see him sniff something in the leaves + takes off....later I found a freakin drink can he threw up there + spooked the buck....I have busted some NICE bucks for the past 5 yrs. but it seems now more peeps are climbing the fence + poaching.....may look for some land myself....should have shot the doe.....a week full of should haves![:sun:] | |

| Sponge,
You need to get a high powered paintball gun man! 40yd.shot no problem, and they pack plenty of punch. Just sit in your tree, and wait for those SOB's to cross the fence, then just start pullin the trigger! They hold 100 pellets, and you can just keep pullin the trigger! Hurt like hell to when they hit! Guaranteed stopper!
B420[] | |

| LOL 420!! Perhps I should wait 'til they are straddling the fence....roll 'em around in that barbwire! [:0] [:sun:] | |

| This is first year EVER since I bought my land over 18 years ago that I have not had any trespassers...kinda nice!! The new law in WI states that you need to know where you are, and no posting of the land is necessary. Criminal (intentional) trespass can carry a BIG fine, so things have settled down here quite a bit!
Sponge...just yell..OOOO!! Is THAT a DEER I hear PEGGY?? BLAST the sucker...Then yell..WAIT!! It is another hunter, don't shoot yet!...Then go ask the fella if he has seen any wounded deer...that you let a few have it that day, but could only hear, not see them, too much brush...you will have the area to yourself, and QUICK!!LOL

| I''m relatin'' to this big time as well. For 50 odd years my family has hunted what amounts to public land in a very remote area in Wisconsin. For the most part we''ve have the best part of an entire section to ourselves. My daddy taught me early to walk wayyyyyy in and sit early and let the other chickens that are too scared to go in any farther than a 1/4 mi. or so scare all the deer to us. That has worked very well.
Enter four wheelers and GPS :-( ............Now any ding bat with a few thousand bucks for an ATV and a good supply of batteries can drive right in on top of me, come and go three or four times a day and generally pretty much ruin a plan that has worked for half a century.
I am adaptable though. This past Monday after" Ricky Retardo and his Fabulous Four Wheeler"( he drove within 60 yds. of where I was sitting!) spooked a nice 8 ptr. along with a big doe and a couple of bambis out of my area, I thought about the slop fishin'' thing. When things get pressured I usually look in the thickest cover I can find (for fish). I know this works for deer too, so I repositioned into thicker cover, even though it was opposite the direction those spooked deer had run. It took ''em three hours, but those deer had "had it" too. The same bunch came right past me, though now the buck was about 10 min. behind the rest of the group, and justice was served. By the looks of things, "Ricky" had been feeding them some corn as well.
Just really gets me going. Don''t get me wrong here either. I can see some legitimate applications for ATV''s. Someone with a disability or just a really old guy (@ 47 I''m not quite there yet) that NEEDS a way to get in and out of the woods. Or possibly just to get deer out of the woods at the end of the day. But to have some LAZY, 20 or 30 something bozo buzzing all over, just because he can is WRONG!
Geeeez Krappie, now you''ve done it, re-stirred my deep woods rage all over again!
