I have been offered some property on Lake Petenwell prior to it going on the open market and am seriously considering it. I have never fished it before and would like to here some feedback on the quality of the lake for Muskie.

Also, does it get real busy with pleasure boaters?

Second biggest lake in the state, there is always some room to roam around. The first thing if the property is a smok`in deal you will never lose out. Beware that some of those lots are going with a covenant attached and will force a dewelling to be constructed in X amount of time and X amount of square footage.( unless it already has a dewelling)

If you are talking about the properties on the west side down by long view point north of the park, it is a nice area, though quite a distance from most of the musky fishing(5-6 miles). That area sees quite an algae bloom in the summer and it gets downright stinky on the main lake there. The musky population is still very low compared with most musky lakes in the state, but it should improve if our resolution passes pushing the size limit to 45". I am disheartened as a local to see some of our favorite access points(the area mentioned above) sold off by the River Power company, but thats life I guess. Have you gone to look at the property? The banks are quite steep(vertical) if it is the area I'm thinking of. It is a nice lake, and great for pleasure boating in the summer for the family. It is hazardous as any flowage can be, but the maps available are quite handy and the buoy system in place saves a number of lower units each year.

Jason Schillinger

I have fished it but not for musky. From what I know about the musky fishing, only certain areas are good but well worth fishing. The walleye fishing is excellent as are the white bass and at times crappie. Nice thing about that is it's a daytime bite due to the stained water and algae bloom. Be careful at times there can be floating logs and there is shallow water in areas out in the middle of the lake. Carp are everywhere and will surface all around your boat wherever you go. Don't be deterred by that, the lake is worth fishing.

I heard that the bloom and swimmer's itch can be nasty on the lake. I also read that the dnr stocked 25000 tiger muskies in 2000. They should be hitting puberty about now.

Gonna take a drive this weekend to check it out in person. Thanks for the feedback guys.

For Petenwell as a musky fishery it’s good and as Jason said it will get better if the new size limit goes through. I’ve had several reports and pictures of fish 45 inches or larger and some over the fifty-inch mark sent to me. I believe the main lake is untouched, except for some sure spots. There’s just some much area and structure I don’t think it has all has been touched.
The Petenwell Musky Challenge has stocked about 2,200 muskies and will continue to stock each year and what the DNR has stocked will add to the population.
The property on Petenwell…I won’t owe it. My reasons – 1st is zebra mussels…once they get established on the lake area you’ll find them on everything. When they start to decay…you won’t be able to stand the smell nor will you be able to walk on them. 2nd reason - algae bloom. Nothing worse than looking down at your shoreline and seeing green water, green rocks or your shoreline covered in the stuff.
Just my opinion.

The DNR did not stock any muskies at all in Petenwell in 2000. There have been both hybrids and true muskies stocked in recent years. The true muskies have all been large fingerlings from 7.7" up to 11.3" length, and most of the stocked hybrids have been tiny at an inch or less for the great majority. Here's the recent musky stocking data (last 10 years). The 2003 data isn't entered into the system yet so this is through 2002:

1998 - 27,818 Hybrid Muskellunge. Unspecified strain. 'Small fingerling' size 0.8"

1999 - 5,035 Hybrid Muskellunge. 'Spooner' strain. 'Small fingerling' size 2.5"

1999 - 5,059 Hybrid Muskellunge. 'Spooner' strain. 'Small fingerling' size 2.0"

1999 - 14,244 Hybrid Muskellunge. 'Spooner' strain. 'Small fingerling' size 1.1"

2001 - 5,760 Hybrid Muskellunge. 'Spooner' strain. 'Small fingerling' size 0.8"

2001 - 7,810 Hybrid Muskellunge. 'Spooner' strain. 'Small fingerling' size 1.2"

2001 - 1,010 Hybrid Muskellunge. Unspecified strain. 'Large fingerling' size 6.9"

2001 - 1,194 Muskellunge. Unspecified strain. 'Large fingerling' size 11.3"

2002 - 430 Hybrid Muskellunge. Unspecified strain. 'Small fingerling' size 0.9"

2002 - 430 Hybrid Muskellunge. Unspecified strain. 'Small fingerling' size 3.7"

2002 - 430 Muskellunge. Unspecified strain. 'Large fingerling' size 7.7"

2002 - 430 Muskellunge. Unspecified strain. 'Large fingerling' size 8.1"

2002 - 430 Muskellunge. Unspecified strain. 'Large fingerling' size 8.9"

2002 - 430 Muskellunge. Unspecified strain. 'Large fingerling' size 9.4"

For those who don't know, the Wisconsin DNR has recently added ALL stocking data to their website from 1972 through 2002 (they are currently working on the 2003 data). Every fish put in every lake by the DNR since 1972 is there and available online. Here's a link to it:

2000 had a smaller scale stocking of musky`s by a private club. They were bigger in size then the DNR fish though!

I have fished this lake in the past but it is too big for me to learn in the amount of time im on it every year... I know todd probably knows the lake better than most and me and my dad have thought about hiring him to learn the lake too... The algae bloom is bad but when there isnt the bloom the lake is just an impressive site... Besides musky fishing it has outstanding smallmouth, walleye, white bass, and some monster panfish as well as HUGE pike... I would say definatly it is a good idea if you have time to learn the water but thats just me then again im not on the lake all the time and i dont know how living on the lake would be.......Just my 2 cents
