If you are fishing shallow water, are you sight fishing, or just fanning? When you guys talk shallow, what do you mean? Do you cast right next to shore, or try to hit them on the head,LOL? Thanks Doug

I fish mostly clear trout lakes. Shallow water is mostly done close to dark and on windy cloudy days. When they are shallow they are often right next to shore it seems some times like if you hit a foot off the shore you are too far out.

So all my shallow casting is to structure not to fish. I understand that at opener you can sight cast to fish still on the spawning beds but i do not fish then for muskies

It depends on the lake and time of year. There are times when you need to drop a bait right next to shore to get them to look, other times if it is a massive flat, you just have to work the whole area to find what the fish are holding on.

I do sight fish them in the spring with jigs and such. We just had Tom Dietz to a presentation on sight fishing for them in the spring on sand. It was a great show that he put on. With this type of approach, you need jigs and good sunglasses, and you just run around finding fish on the sand flats. It is really cool to see how they react to this type of presentation.

Allstate,

Early in the season, VERY shallow, I would be sight fishing on clear water and trying to cast to specific fish.

When shallow, in stained water and/or into the season a bit, fanning as you say could be an exercise in futility. Then I would obviously find the new weed growth or any structure and cast to it.

T1, I heard Tom had some AWESOME photos in his presentation down there! Can't wait until 4/1. We'll talk soon.

I take that site fishing with a grain of salt (unless in canada) but just driving around looking for fish to throw at is a fruitless waste of good fishing time. 99.9% of the time in Wi. waters the fish you will see will also see you and you will not be catching them. There are rare times when you will luck out but in doing this, you are way better off knowing where you are fishing and using the stealth mode and fishing the holding area blindly. Most of the time even fishing blindly will yeild a very large % of males, yes there are exceptions but not the rule. On most Wi. lakes most fisherman will never even see this pattern because of timing or people pressure.
