I used Rollie and Helens leaders last year and they seemed to kink up quickly and a few broke off. What are the best leaders out there for the money and can you advise on the lb for applications for bucktails, cranks and jerks.

I use Rays Leaders for Less. By far the best. I fish way more than the avg. guy and haven't had one break.

The site is on my links page, and if you order enough and mention my site you get a discount and free shipping.

ditto on the 80lb mono. easy to make, cheap, and never fail both trolling and casting.

Aren't you worried about bite-offs with the mono? I've heard more and more people mention that they use mono. I may need to give it a try.

I only use Wisher leaders from Girad, IL or Ryan's Custom leaders... In ten years I have had only one wisher leader break on me and it was an old one...good thing it happened on a cast with a floating lure. The solid steel leaders will eventually kink no matter what.. I reccomend replacing them when they start to get a decent curve to them... the one that broke on me was almost a complete circle when it broke... so maybe when they start to look like this )... Just double checked..its Wishin not wisher... Here is a link to their website: http://www.wisher-lures.com/ Ryan's leaders are only available at some fishing shows, usually the Tri-Esox show is where I get mine.

I make my own with black nylon coated 7-strand SS wire. They are cheap to make and you can re-use the most expensive components such as ball bearings and snaps. When they get kinked just replace the wire. I would recommend replacing snaps often, as they can become weak from repeated opening and closing. I generally make 12"-14" for casting and 48" for trolling (longer leaders protect your main line from sharp rocks when your trolled lure crashes into the Canadian Shield).

I also make my own leaders. This is how I do it,I take 124# stainless steel wire.I use a wire bender To form my two loops on both ends.I try to get about 5-6 twist on both ends.I tie direct to one end,I run split rings on all of my baits, attach other end to the bait.I use this for all my lures for the most part.30' of wire is only $2.00,wire bender was like 8$.So now you are making leaders for about 10 cents. If I'm runing a bucktail then I will put a good BB swivel on one end.So Give it a try strong and dependable leaders can be made at home cheap.

I make my own 7 strand crimping the sleeves, and my own .051 wire and a bender to make the loops.

there are a lot of good leaders on the market today in both seven strand
and solid wire..i prefer solid wire when working cranks , gliders and
jerks...seven strand for plastics and bucks (easier to figure eight a
bucktail...i have found that my preference is the buchertail leaders..
will probably start making my own someday thogh..blah!..though..

Anyone know what knot to use to tie sevenstrand? Are knots more reliable than crimps?

I would also recommend www.leadersforless.com He makes all kinds and his prices are the best. I don't see me going to the trouble to save a few bucks a year and I go through a lot of them. Man his titanium leaders are $6:50 of half the price of some.

JSiegler, you can tie 7strand with a figure 8 knot. Having said that, I would crimp them. Get some good quality sleaves and a good pair of crimping pliers, and the crimps are 100% reliable. I do stress test all of my leaders, and have had some eye opening experiences doing it.

I make my own and have never had a failure. Its really easy and anyone can do it. I use .051 precut bucktail wire for jerkbait leaders w/ a crane swivel and stringease snap. Its very thick wire and it is hard to bend. No one that I know of sells leaders this thick. For everything else I use 90 lb. nylon coated sevenstrand wire.

Bowline knot for seven strand. Never had one slip/break yet in 10 + yrs.

I make my own. 60lb sevenstrand uncoated, 75lb BB swivels and snap - Lightweight set up
100 seven strand uncoated 150lb snap and 100lb BB swivel - Hvy set-up
I can make a variety of lengths to suit my lure and water conditions.
I buy my straight wire leaders, they last long enough.

This summer I plan on working a 80lb Flourocarbon - leader

Answering the question, "Are crimps relaible?"

Yes. Very. I use linesmans pliers to crimp the sleeve, and have had no problems.
