Only bought a couple new lures this year and one thing I noticed was how sharp the hooks were. Last couple years it seems the makers have upped their game on hooks as far as sharpness or maybe hook manufacturers have upped theirs. Again, not that many lures but wondering if this is a trend?

I've noticed that too altho to be honest it's been a good while since I purchased a bait at Thornes. This is, grabbing a few on the rack and 3-finger testing for that "stick" or lack thereof!!...It's improved tons over the last decade for sure!!

Used to be I'd buy a few baits and just KNEW I was going to toss the hooks as sold!

I always test by running lightly across my thumb nail. In the past, none were sharp enough to dig in unless you put a lot of pressure. Not the case with the last few lures.
Will always check and check again after weeds, bottom, etc. but it has been a positive change.

I agree, the hook quality has improved on a lot of baits, but I still feel compelled to give those barbs a lick or two with the file..

New hook tips seem to have what it takes to hook. But that 3 sided blade to penetrate is what’s needed. I just don’t feel confident in factory sharpness. Always create that cutting edge, and as Mike says, touch those barbs as well

JD……that fine tooth Knife file is exactly what you need to do the job !

New hooks can be the dullest hooks out there, two things sharper a new hook and take that new reel out of the box and lube it up. New is new but not ready to be fished with. When I get a new lure sharpen the hooks and replace the spit rings and add a spit ring to the front eye. Depending on the lure I may replace the hooks too. As stated above the hooks across the board are better so I don't do this as much as in the past. And you can never have too many hook files and keep them out of the rain.
