I've heard it countless times that you should make sure to use long leaders for trolling or you could harm the fish. Could someone please explain this? I've caught over 100 muskies while trolling, all with 10" to 12" leaders and have never encountered any problems with my leaders and/or harmed fish. So I'm not sure what the longer leader will prevent when trolling is involved. What's the reason for longer trolling leaders?

AWH,the main reason for using long leaders is because the fish sometimes roll onto the line.I have caught a few that would have cut the line and swam off with a lure in thier mouths.I do agree with you about the shorter leaders but I like the 36"ers.Hope I have helped

AWH, anther reason to use longer leaders is if you are fishing rough terrain. Such as rocks and things that can nick your line up. The leader will bear the brunt of the punishment this way, and you won't loose a fish due to your line breaking from being pouded off of structure all day.

Another good reason for long leaders is that having a swivel furthur from the lure will help catch floating or suspended weeds that the line catches and keep them from ending up on the lure and killing the action.

I use Seaguar Fluorocarbon 80 lb test Leaders for trolling. My leaders are 3/4 the legnth of my rod,10 ft rod 7 ft leader.Reasons;big fish roll up past leaders resulting in cut fish, leader absorbs the bottom crunching and ware, lure action still good after the weeds build up on the swivel between leader and main line, close to invisable near the lure in gin clear water, but most important the Fluorocarbon line floats so doesn't add extra weight to the lip of a crankbait, wire leaders add weight and change the lip angle and action on the crankbait, especialy at very low speeds of 2.0 mph and under.

Another reason I like a long flourocarbon leader is that when a fish does roll in the leader it does not get those whiplash marks in it like a steel leader can do.
