Location: Southern W.Va. | I was wondering if anyone had any problems with floro or "hard-mono" leaders?? Just can't bring myself to use it as I don't want to get cutoff due to not using wire. Whats the different in "hard-mono" and say 50# mono? Please help out this dummy. I fish some clear water lakes and sometimes I think that the fish are effected by the wire. Any comments??

| I have had no problems using mono leaders. I fish shelbyville all the time so I am bumping timber all day long and have had nothing but good results. Shelby is not the clearest lake and I believe I have caught more fish changing to mono then steel so I think they may actually help in clear water if they work in stained water. I would give mono leaders a try.

Location: Illinois | I use fluoro and I have not had a problem with bite offs. I have figured out that fluoro is good for trolling but it would not be my choice for any other application. I fish fluoro on my trolling set ups because I figure the fish may get a good long look at the lure while trolling as opposed to a casting situation. Honestly, I have not noticed a marked increase in terms of numbers and that hols true for me on both clear and dark water lakes. One thing that does make me apprehensive is reading posts about fluo giving way or being bitten off on sucker rigs. The jury is still out as far as I'm concerned but if you troll give it a try. hj |

Location: oswego, il | I have been using flouro for trolling, casting and sucker rigs for 4 years with no problems whatsoever. Just make sure you toss them or retie a new one if they get nicked. |

Location: Racine WI | The key question would be, how often do you have a leader, wire or mono, actually inside a muskie's mouth? When lip hooked, as most fish are, it's not an issue unless -- also rare -- the fish rolls enough to get the leader tangled in its teeth or gill plate. I'm cautious by nature, but I wonder how often my wire leaders even contact the fish. Unfortunately, subtle presentations of smaller baits are more likely to be what's called for in clear water or other shy-fish situations, where a mono leader seems indicated, and of course, plastic jigs or other baits that may be inhaled have a higher risk. Sounds like a Catch - 22. |

| I have not used mono or flouro and was just about ready to pull the trigger on some when I read Nwild's heatbreaking post last fall. I just don't want to tell the story about the only fish to cut my leader was the first 40 pounder I hooked into. Ain't gonna do it. I read somewhere that if you can cut it will scissors or a knife it doesn't belong in a muskies mouth. I buy into that one. |

| Used 80# floro all last season, boated 27 fish, a couple over 40", never a single problem. Not even a nick or kink. Lack of kinks greatly reduced downtime of replacing metal leaders that get bent due to snags or net action. I have had, once, a 7strand leader break due to a kink created by the fish's fighting, just as the fish was being netted. Figure this is a rare thing, though. Also had a titanium leader break (at the crimp) on a snag while trolling sorta fast. I guess all leaders carry some risk of failure. |
