sworrall, muskyone, any and all jig aficianados...

How are you attaching your jigs to a leader? I know tying direct is more dependable, but I like the snap for changing baits and easier storage.

What is everybody using?

Thanks -
Luke

For sure direct tie, I just store my jigs in a Plano box that is long enough for the leaders to lay flat. As for changing lures I carry 3 or 4 jig rods ready with different styles and weights at all times. Might be overkill to some but just covering the bases to me. Rod 1, 65# braid and a 1/2 oz to 3/4 oz football head for on the rocks. Rod 2, 65# braid and a 5/8 oz to 3/4 oz weedless jig for deep water weeds or the real thick stuff. Rod 3, 20# mono 3/8oz to 1/2 oz weedless jig for the shallow inside weedline. Rod 4, 20# mono 3/8 oz swimmer head or reaper head for the big hops and longer sweeps. I also rip this jig through the weeds from time to time. Somewhat lighter, thinner wire hooks on these last two jigs that's why the mono is the ticket here. I may retie if used a lot but I don't often totally change lures, just pick up another rod, change trailers etc.

I've been using a Titanium leader attatched to the jig with a splitring. The snaps are just one more thing to fail and they hang up in the weeds.

I use snaps, and have NEVER had one fail or open. 'One probably has it right if you want to be certain, but I have used these things since the late 60's, and have used handmade leaders with snaps since then. The newer styles convinced me they are OK, including the Berkely Crosslock snap and others like it.

I do not find snaps to collect weeds in any way, or cause any problems. I make my own leaders, using the same 1500 yard spool of 60# test Sevenstrand from the late 70's to date. I use sleeves too.

Most of the muskies I catch on a jig are caught on 14# to 17# monofilament. I feel it is not necessary to create a leader that is 100# test if the line is 14#.

If you DO want to be sure, trust One, he is correct to be ABSOLUTELY certain a snap won't fail. No snap, no worry.

Just giving you my experience.
