How did you fare out on the open waters this weekend?

It is snowing hard, blowing hard, and 29* here. 5" new stuff on the ground and more coming.

I did manage to get on the Cave for afew hour's on Friday. I don't have much to report other than my new rig run's really nice. I went thru about 20 gallon's of gas out cruising and trying to get the feel of the thing. LOL I did find some 50 degree water in the back of the creek's and the main lake was at 42 degree's. It was at winter pool and stained on the mainlake, but a little clearer up in beaver and the river system. I threw the trap on some of the warmer flat's for a minute, and I also hit some mainlake timbered point's with some glide bait's, but no luck. I guess I probably fished for an hour or so, then the bottom fell out of the sky. LOL I see now that the Cave has come up about 5 feet and it's almost at summer pool. I'm sure the color was affected alot. I guess all of that warm rain water really turned the Musky on though. I have seen numerous report's from several people, of Muskie's being caught on Saturday. I know alot of people don't care for the muddy water that the rain bring's, but I know that the watertemp had to increase quite abit after this system went threw. It look's like the weather forecast down here is temp's still in the 50s and approaching 60 again by next weekend. So the watertemps by the time the Cave outing is here, should be pretty nice. I'm not sure if I will be able to get on the Cave this coming weekend. But if I do I will tell you all what I find out. cprChris

I made it out for only about an hour on Friday. Nothing to show for it.

The Lone Stone and I hit it for about 4 hrs Saturday. Besides the shad that ran into Shawn's Suick there was not any action. Water was 39.5 in the warmest spot, with some icebergs still floating around. Nice to get the arms stretched out again.

My objectives this weekend were just to get the gear out and make sure it all works. I found I do NOT like Spiderwire's Steath braid for my spinning reel, back to original braid for me. The Gambler started up after a few cranks and seemed to run just fine with the new plugs (this is an idle speed only lake). I got back to the ramp and trailered the boat, pulled the drainplug and LOOK OUT. Bunch of oil. Plug back in, clean the ramp, what happened.
My guess is when my auto shop fixed my trailer brakes and were kind enough to replace a faulty deep cycle battery, they bumped the oil tank's hose in the process. The oil reservoir has two lines, one brings air in and the other, oil out. Of course, it was the oil out line that got sheared off, and the bilge filled with two gallons of some pretty expensive oil. This is just a plastic cap with two plastic nipples, dealer told be today the new cap was a hundred bucks. Whoa.
Just glad I found it out at home and not on the lake in Kentucky. Fortunately, I didn't activate the switch for the bilge pumps so none got in the lake. A bunch of Dawn soap and water seemed to get most of it. I did get to try out a few of my new baits and they work great. Bring on the Cave. m
