I am planning on repowering my river boat this spring, and am having trouble deciding which motor to buy. The only sure thing right now is that it will be a Yamaha. I have a 20 year old 2 stroke on it now, and it has served me fine albeit the fuel economy is not great and it loads up a bit on the troll. Are the new two strokes any more fuel efficient than the old ones? Are the newer two strokes more suited for trolling than the older ones(I troll about 10 hours per week on average)? Are the four strokes in the 50 horsepower range worth the extra $1000 or so? I've heard that fuel economy is increaed by up to 30%, is this true? I plan on making a descision in a couple weeks and any recommendations either way wil be greatly appreciated.

If your only going with the Yamaha get a 4 stroke. You add some weight to the boat compared to what a 2 stroke weighs, but if you do a lot of trolling, everything I hear is the 4 strokes are better suited.

Jason,

Take a good look at the Merc 50 4 Stroke. All Merc, and EFI. Suzuki makes a pretty nice 4 stroke, too. Johnson is a Suzzy. I actually like the Suzzy over the Yammy, but the Merc EFI is a great motor.

Thanks a ton for the replies. I think my decision has been made(4 stroke). Shep, I probably wouldn't own a black anchor(Merc), just had too much bad luck with em, as did friends. My Yammies have been awesome! My dad loves his Suzuki 150, and I may have to compare prices with them too. Thanks for the recommendation.

If you haven't seen or heard an Evinrude E-TEC 50, You better look before you go somewhere else. 7 year warranty.

A buddy has the yammy 50 4 stroke on a stick. Excellent motor! The only problem with it is really slow trolling. We do some salmon fishing in the spring and you need a dead slow troll. We need to drag a bucket to go slow enough. If it's just for muskie trolling it should be fine.
