At my Muskies inc Chapter meeting yesterday there was discussion abt a roundtable that ODNR had the Friday before the Ohio show.. Apparently, the cost of food minnows has more than tripled, and Ohia is considering revamping their goal of stocking one fish per acre. As a measure, WV uses a quarter fish per acre.
It was also stated that many states are having trouble raising baby muskies in the heat of summer. West Virginia lost it's shipment of Chautauqua strain eggs from New york in a shipping mistake and plans are being considered to have NY raiee them to fry status first to prevent such a mistake again.
Anyone else hearing of problems stocking fish? From the discussion, it sounded like Wisconsin has some issues? m

Not so much of a problem but the one fish comm. place that I know of takes there water and has to let it warm up in a separate pond to keep them around 70* so they wanna feed better. Plus they have some trouble of them eating each other so they had to be separated. I’m sure there are others.

I know we are having problems with those invasive snail and other diseases in our trout stocking and have been hearing a lot of them had to be killed.

Here in Illinois we have a few lakes stocked every year, some every two and the number is growing to every three years. Many of the every three year lakes used to get 1 per acre annually.

Having said that the Hatchery has improved their methods average fish size for stocking and survival rates.

It was a good meeting and we got to see the boat, motor, and trailer that the chapter bought WVDNR with funds from a pipeline company's environmental settlement. It will be outfitted for small stream shocking. I'll see if a pic will post here.
Report we got was for 2023 Stonewall got 478 advanced fingerlings, Burnsville got 100. Total for the state / year was 946; 10,610 total since 2015.

Hope that helps. m
