Fellas, I need your advice. I m looking to take my 11yo son on his first trip to MN possibly CA. Gimme some suggestions where to go in general to catch fish: smallies, pike, my primary goal is just for him to catch a lot of fish - not the trophy trip. I was considering a few places so far: Dumbell Lake in MN - heard it has alot action in general, and then Rowan lake @ Alexanders. I have been to Rowan a bunch of times and with their smallie population, portage lakes, fly in float plane I think it would be pretty awesome time for him. I am open to any and all suggestions, even northern WI, I just haven't fished WI much.
thanks guys...

I think the timing of the trip is more important than the destination. You can go to a number of Vilas County lakes over Memorial day and simply cast the shorelines with Senco's rigged wacky. Active Prespawn fish with super easy presentation.

Have to agree on timing and water temps. Right now over here the big trout (steelhead) and big browns are still making their trip in the creeks I bet he would love that. Not sure about the states you want to go.

Most anything in Canada is better than MN by a long shot. I'm certain rowan would be perfect for you.

Voyageurs National Park is a pretty awesome place if you like the idea of boat camping. My family loves it.

You would not go wrong heading to Lake of Woods. Numerous options. On my bucket list is Rowan in Canada but more limited options.

Pay attention to the moon time calendar for the month and you'll have a blast.
There's an old tale to keep in mind:
A father and son went for a three day fishing trip. Upon return, the father's buddy asked him how it went? "Terrible! Could not get the fish to bite to save us. I'm so disappointed."
The next week at school the son bragged all week that he got to go fishing with his dad. m

What Mikie said above... I'm lucky enough to still get to hunt and fish with my dad every year. Still my best hunting and fishing buddy even at 75 and me being 33. I used to think it was always about getting birds or catching fish. NO matter how the fishing is, he'll look back and remember the time you spent with him more than anything else. That said, i'd take him to Rowan. Its on most every fisherman's bucket list and would be an ideal spot for the first of many "trip of a lifetime" you guys will share together i'm sure.

If you want to catch a ridiculous amount of fish in Canada go between June 1st -14th… Smallmouth, walleye and pike will all be relatively shallow… I recently took a father and son to a drive to destination in Ontario (early June), we caught 27 pike over 35”… in a day. Next day smallies until your arm fell off, at least a dozen times we had triples…Mid August, you better be dialed into a pattern. My 2 cents, good luck!

Fishing wise go to Rowan, if you want to do other things besides our fishing go to northern Wisconsin. Pick a town or area lake jump go out for dinner, walk in the woods. The main thing is just go.
