in an effort to get my boat to fit in my too-small garage, i needed to lower the motor. this required hooking up the battery to run the power tilt/trim. as i connected the main positive lead to the battery (negative was already connected), something in the motor hummed, went "pop", and then pumped out about 5 seconds worth of light gray smoke. needless to say, this was NOT the result i was hoping for the first time i connected power to my recent investment.

any thought on what that might have been???

on a side note, after waving the smoke off, the power t/t worked fine cranking the motor down and i managed to angle-cram her into my garage where she won't get beat up by tonight and tomorrow's thunderstorms. i guess the wife's car will just have to suffer outside...

I would pull the hood and check all your wiring. Two questions..what brand is it and is it brand new? If it is brand new take it back as soon as possible. If it is used it will be worth taking in to be looked at if you want to double check everything is ok. If used but from a dealer they should look at no charge(I would think).Actually more then two questions, does the boat have a 24 volt trolling motor? If so, is your starter battery seperate from those two that would be used for the troller? The reason I ask is my brother hooked his depth finder across his two trolling batteries so it took a shot of 24 volt juice rather then the 12 it should have got. It smoked a little right before it stopped working. I hope it is nothing serious..just got mine back from the shop and was 600 lighter for it(upgraded carbs).

lambeau- LOL- She'll actually let you get away with that? As most of us electrical engineers know letting the smoke out is not a good thing, as it's very hard to recapture all that smoke and get it back into the point from where it escaped. From your description, I would suspect a little 4-legged critter has been at work. He/she probably nibbled on some of the wires and they were shorted. When you connected the battery, the short got very hot and probably burn't itself open. If you need some help finding the source of the smoke let me know (847-6123).

thanks Al...

you may be a savant - or at a minimum have plenty of experience. when i looked at under some better light today, i saw a couple of wires which looked like they may have been nibbled on. however, they're on the opposite side of the motor from where she was making noise before it went "pop."

very generous of you, and i'll take you up on your offer and try to give you a call tonight. i've been wanting to meet you anyway since we're practically neighbors.
