| On Wednesday at 3:00 P.M. it was 52 degrees a hour later it dropped 37 degrees and by 8:30 P.M. it was zero went down to 24 below and -42 with wind chill and got five inches of snow too. Today's high was -7 not counting the wind chill. Tomorrow 17 degrees and on Sunday (Christmas) 50 degrees. |

| Came down to Iowa for the Holiday. Currently -11, and the wind is howling. Don't know the wind chill, but it's officially cold. Got about 5' last night. Doesn't really feel like winter, if this doesn't happen at least a few times during the season. |

| At 6:30AM today, it was -13, windchill of -34 at the Rhinelander Airport. I walk outside, 45 minutes to an hour every day and yesterday walking into the wind had a real bite. But before leaving had read about how the warming shelters in Milwaukee were scrambling to open during the day when normally closed to the homeless. Calling volunteers, etc.
Rhinelander has a facility for temporary housing and it is almost always close to capacity, men, women, kids. Being without shelter is tough at any time, but in winter I can't imagine. The Rhinelander facility is hurting because during the pandemic they had to cancel their biggest fundraisers.
If you got a couple extra bucks in your pocket this winter or would like to make a big pot of venison chili but the kids won't eat it, check out your local shelter/warming center. |

Haven't felt anything like this since my last trip to Duluth 1/17...there aren't any AC outlets for heaters in hotel parking lots down here tho..

| On the 21st the first day of winter 31 year ago I rolled into town from getting laid off from my job in California my parents come the summer before. The year before we came they had record cold temps in 1990. Denver area is a four season town but nothing like what you guys have in Wisconsin and Minnesota. My mom is from Deer River Minnesota and moved to Denver in High school, one day mom and her sister got up took the city bus to high school and it was 20 below they got to school and it was closed they were shocked they walked to school lots of time in 20 below in Deer River so they went and watched a movie then took the bus back home. In the last 122 years there's been 45 white Christmases (1 inch of snow on the ground) It snowed twice on Christmas eve and twice on Christmas in the 31 Christmases we been here. One year the local NFL team was playing in San Diego on Christmas and it was low 50's and raining in San Diego and it was 60 and cloudy here. We get days every winter that the highs are teens and below zero at night. This was different. They opened the National Western Complex for a additional warming center. (this is where the stock show is every January) And every January we have stock show weather the coldest of the winter. |

| While the wind was howling yesterday, here in Iowa, it is absolutely raging today. Power has been blinking off and back on about 8 or 10 times since around 3:00 a.m. At least we have a little sunshine! |

I was out clearing brush this morning in it, no big deal, I was bored and needed to get out of the house.
They need to rename my generation the “bulldozer generation”.

Glad it's not so bad where you are. Not the same for everyone. Relatives in Oklahoma and Wichita, are experiencing low single digit temps, and -15 wind chill, for the first time in their lives. Here in eastern Iowa, haven't been able to see more than 4 or 5 houses down the block, and it quit snowing over 24 hours ago. Wind has been steady at 35 all day, with gusts to 50, and isn't supposed to slow down until after midnight tomorrow. Saw the road map for Minnesota, and the entire southwest quadrant of the state, has all the roads closed. I've lived in Minnesota for 40 years, and have never seen that many roads closed. I've seen conditions like this many times, but not lasting for over 3 straight days, with no let up. The historic aspect of this, that they are speaking of, is the drop in barometric pressure that created the "bomb cyclone". Still not anything to freak out about, but it is an unusual storm in it's size and scope. Pretty sure you wouldn't have spent much time clearing brush today, in 50 mile per hour gusts and -11 temps, unless you're just trying to prove something. |

| Just for kicks I looked up the record lows for our area going back to 1942. Year to year it varies anywhere from 0 to -27F with most years showing at least on cold spell with temperatures below -10. An awful lot of them were in December. Just for once, I'd love to see a weather forecaster get in front of the camera and say "it's gonna get friggin' cold next week, just like it has every winter since well.... DIRT!" |

| Yes, depending where you are relative to that massive low. Pretty sure the folks in Buffalo are not clearing brush today either.
First winter I spent in the snow belt of the U.P. a storm moved in Friday morning and by night time my barometer was the lowest I ever saw. Storm raged until late Sunday, early Monday. Took me 5 hours and almost 15 gallons of gas to clear a 1500 Sq ft driveway with a 10hp snow blower. I set the movable pin on the barometer to mark the lowest I observed. It never got back there in the 30 years the barometer lasted before the spring or whatever gave way internally. |

Woke up the next morning to a drift that prevented me from opening the front door without reaching around with a broom to clear the snow, and snow past the doorknob at the back door. Everything was shut down - schools, roads, stores, EVERYTHING. |

It's interesting to see the difference in the average yearly snowfall as you go north. Rhinelander is 56", Mercer 115", Houghton is 210". What do people do with the snow that have a small lot? Have it hauled away?

| I lived in Hancock, other side of bridge from Houghton. Mainly they kept piling it higher. Yoopers figure something out. Things get tight. Businesses often have it hauled frequently but not often with
homes. Couple times I was shoveling up when I got to the roof edge. One year I had to snow blow drive 20 straight days, some times more than once. That was in Negaunee Township. One snow pocket to another. Never claimed to be smart

Country living and hard work and realizing what you are really capable of and what you can endure is something that most of society has no idea of today, which is sad since so many have gotten used to convenience and have no idea what to do if they don’t have it. |

Glad it's not so bad where you are. Not the same for everyone. Relatives in Oklahoma and Wichita, are experiencing low single digit temps, and -15 wind chill, for the first time in their lives. It is one thing to be by your home, working outside. I did that too. Also walked three miles outside. Did it again this morning.
But, go out on the highway, have a mechanical issue and you can put not only yourself in danger but others in blizzard conditions. Some counties with drifting put "no tow" orders in effect. You slide in the ditch, you are there until the wind stops. I travel with extra clothes, boots, etc. in winter but spending a night in a ditch is not my thing.

I had one of those on my Homelite when I lived in the U.P. worked great. But, got carried away one day clearing the ski trail and tried to cut too big. Snapped the drive shaft. Hopefully they are better made today, but when it worked, it was great. Not too heavy, could carry it and the gas/oil can way down the trail and trim back all the stuff that grew over the summer. You have Buckthorn? That seems to be the villain my relatives in central WI battle. |

| Thursday was the coldest day I've seen in the 31 years I've lived here. (Colorado) Our house is under 20 years old and I think it was made to handle cold weather and we didn't lose power. Good on that front. Today 47 tomorrow 51. The airport is a cluster to say the least. I was supposed to pick my sister and brother in law up at the airport on Thursday and the flight was canceled they flew to Vegas yesterday and were supposed to be here this morning, flight canceled. Maybe get a flight tomorrow or rent a car and drive 12 hours? In our family does a big party on Christmas Eve with lot's of food and drink and Brunch on Christmas day. Been working on it for days. It's in limbo now! One last thing some of the states next door I'm not sure if there homes are made for this. |

This is primarily what I was responding to. I don't know, maybe your forecasters were over blowing the storm, which isn't unusual for anything, as that is kind of what any news outlet typically does. The forecasting I was watching in the Twin Cities, before I left for Iowa, was pretty matter of fact, and basically described what eventually happened. Once I got down here, the local news was pretty much just telling everyone what was happening and what conditions were like out there. None of it was anything that would scare even the dumb. And to call this storm just winter, and occurs every year is incorrect. The depth of the low pressure system was unusually deep, and the scope of the storm, from the rockies to the Ohio valley, and from Canada to Texas, lasting almost three days without moving much, does not occur every year. It was a rare occurrence. |

Yes. It works like a dream for thorn and anything under 2” if it’s soft wood, plus it’s easier to do in the winter when everything else is knocked down. In summer I would not be able to even get in there. |

| The cold we had was rare however we get lot's of heavy snow and wind. A couple weeks ago we had a storm that dropped feet of snow in the mountains and 2" of snow at my house in Northwest Denver, not single flake in Denver itself and eight miles up the up the interstate (I-76) from my home they 13" and 50 miles a hour wind and white outs and shut down the highway to the Nebraska border. I this town when a big storm is coming everyone leaves work early and goes home. I saw all those people in western New York who died in there cars and a lot of them coming home from work. Didn't they see this coming? Or maybe we live in Buffalo snow! no biggie! |
