I'm looking for recommendations on a good reel repairman. I have a couple of reels that the drag just won't tighten down enough on. |

what you are taking about is not the drag, it is line slipping on the spool.
Two totally different things. You should always use some sort of backing, either mono, tape, etc.. Braided lines are slick and will slip on the spool.
That has nothing to do with the drag not getting tight.

Chuck Nelson will be opening up a shop very shortly in Rhinelander, WI. Nelson's Choice Bait and Tackle. Not sure if he is doing any other reels besides Abu Garcia, but it's worth checking into. |

| Muskiehead,
I had a c4 that did the same thing, could not get the drag tight enough. You might want to check into smoothie drag washers to correct the problem if your drag washers are worn out.

Location: Sheboygan Falls, WI | Thanks for the recommendation Travis. As a former reel tech for the Abu Garcia National Service center, that's right, directly from the factory, I do Abu's in my sleep. I have done many other reels in the past as well. I will be doing pretty much whatever someone wants fixed.
One nice thing that we will offer is on-site reel repair on the weekends with pretty much no waiting, as long as the parts are on hand. You walk in and hand me a reel, you will walk out with it fixed on the spot. I will be doing reel repair in the evenings during the week and all day on the weekends.
Store opens April 16th and I have a list of people who want me to do all of their reel repairs already. Gotta love it!!
God, I hate all of this snow we are getting again today. Suppose to be about 10" when it is done. I wish I could click my heels, wiggle my nose or nod my head and make spring with no snow be here.

Location: Just above the thermoclime | Karol, thanks for the tip, but I do have backing. It's definitely the drag and not line slipping on the spool. My guess is I have oil on the disc. I replaced it myself last year, and it helped, but still wasn't able to lock it down enough. Funny thing is, is it's a C4 just like Kly.
I also have some other reels that need an overhaul.
Chuck, I'd like to get these reels fixed sooner than April, is that a possibility? I suspect you are swamped with the details about opening up shop.
send me a private message on how I can follow up with you.
Thanks for the info ppl. |

Location: Holly, MI | Boy, if it is just grease or oil on the drag washers you could take it apart de-grease it and have it back together faster than you could box it up to send it out for repair. Don't even look at the schematic, it might scare you. Remove the three screws on the handle side of the reel then remove the handle and the star drag and all the parts until you reach the drag washers. Just lay them out in the table in the order and side up that they came out and reverse to re-assemble. |

| Hey Muskiehead...If you live in the Chicagoland area...go to Kolar Bait and Tackle in Carol Stream (630)372-0125. Mike there works on all reels...he's handled all my Shimano reels for some time now and does excellent work. Quick turn-around also. |
