Location: Holly, MI | My car said 48 degrees today as a max temp. When the temps hit the 40's it is time to hit the Steelhead rivers..Right?
I had a 5 fish day!!!
I was looking for big dogs but had to settle for the pups. At least I know the DNR is really still planting them.
A five fish day with about 25 total inches of Rainbow!! Still beats Icefishing to be on open water.
Did you notice that cool looking hand crafted steelhead rod in the background?

Location: Racine, Wi | Nice pic lobi. That had to go a good 6 (ozs) I am just waiting for the rivers to open down here. Should be any day, if not today. Unfortunately I have to fish river muskies with Kly this weekend.
Those are some good fish Jason. Stick a few more this spring.
By the way, I was looking for those baits for you guys. There was a big bin of them at BPS, but I forgot what colors you guys said. Must be my old age. heh heh heh. Let me know what colors to look for again, and I can see what I can find. |

Location: Holly, MI | My condolances on you "having" to fish river Muskies this weekend.
After I hooked two of those little scrappers I removed the barb from the tiny jig and they were so wiggly that they would just flip off the hook and I didn't have to touch them. They were NOT the reason I had brought my camera along. Late March the rivers should start having some real Steel come in around here. The river was extreemly low and clear because we havn't had any melt yet.
If you were talking about Hot-n-Tots at BPS the hard ones to find are color 131, all copper. The lable says "Copper Clad". I think they quit making them way before they sold to Rapala so there probably isn't any left. There was another hard to find hot color called sunset pink (I think) It was a pink metallic. Also hard to find is the Magnum size. I think the regular ones are 1/4 oz and 1/2 oz. This mag was quite a bit bigger.
Steelies are for sure a disease but not the same as skis |

Location: Willoughby, Ohio | Gotta love the steel thing! I have one of Ohio's better steelie rivers 2 minutes from my home.I figure I spend 6 mos chasing muskies, 5 months chasing steelies and a month complaining about the ice on the water. |

Location: Racine WI | Lucky me. I live literally a stone's throw from the WDNR steelhead spawn-collection facility, so you know there's a good run on my river. UNlucky me. Holding the fish up, stripping eggs and milt, then releasing them upstream of the facility certainly impacts on the time they stay in the river, and since the facility went in, seems like the entire Midwest shows up to fish just downstream of the protected zone. Getting so I hardly bother to go after them any more -- as bad as opening day on a stocked pond. (Though I did have fun last spring with a few 10-12 pounders on microlite tackle, 4lb line, and the smallest Panther Martin spinners before and after the primetime crowds.) |

Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | I'm thinking any time now by us here in SE Wis. River levels are going to be nice for once. My last outing of the season in Nov ending up by having a client land a 38" 19 lb. that Fittante is doing....just seeing that fish had me wanting more and made this winter a long one!
There is no fish that fights like a Steelhead, I've had them chase spawn sacs right out of the water! |

Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | I've been guiding for Steelies for about 4 years now and they never cease to amaze. I've caught fish as late as June and as early as July. The June fish are heading back usually and the July fish are summer runners called Skamaina.
There probally would'nt be an offseason at all if water temps would remain cool enough for them to stay in the rivers. Guys I talk to never seem to grasp the notion that SteelHead are trout.....just because they're home is in the Great Lakes doesnt mean thier natural tendencies are to be in the lake.....if they could, they'd be in rivers year round, and here in SE Wis, they're in the rivers about 8 to 9 mos of the year.
Tuffy....send your .TIFF images to me,I'll convert them to JPG's in Photo Shop
