Location: Belgium | I have always wondered why people fish tournaments so maybe some of the pro's could answer my question. Why fish tournaments and not just guide people? Doesn't this take the fun out of fishing, having to produce fish? I can't shake the feeling that "I must catch to pay the bills" kind of ruins the fun for a lot of people, not to speak of increased fishing and boating pressure. Or are these things always taken into consideration? I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts and remarks. Not trying to bash tourney fishermen at all, just looking for some feedback. |

| Good questions Dirk.I like fishing tournaments for a few reasons. First, I love the competition. Not competition from other anglers, but from Mother Nature. I've got x amount of time under x conditions to produce fish. All people in the tourney are in the same boat.Almost like a final exam.Fish, study, fish ,learn ,study some more then fish.I'm fishing against Ma' Nature and the fish.I really like the idea of the PMTT in that there are a variety of lake types.Different kinds of systems.Tournaments are also a great learning opportunity.I was blown away a few years ago fishing the Rollie and Helens spring tourney when Jim Saric and Chip Porter won by fishing open water. In spring? You bet.As to your question about the money aspect of fishing tournaments, Not many can just fish tournaments and make a living.Bass walleye or muskie.Although a couple guys in Northern Wi. have made a couple hundred K the last 5 yrs. or so.I'm glad to see local DNR personnel getting involved . I think the debate will go on for years, but with these folks involved, I hope the fishery will always take prescedent over cash.Just some thoughts. Steve |

Location: Illinois-Indiana | Steve hit it on the head, there is nothing like waking up in the morning and hitting the water to go up against not only 100 or so other fisherman but to take on ol mother nature herself.
You never know what she is going to throw at you on that day and trying to figure the fish out is a BIG rush.
I'm sure the $$$$$$$$ aspect is also a big reason, where else can you go out for a day or two of fishing and come back with a pocket full of cash for a fun day on the water.:) |
