| I am going to compile a detailed log this year for the first time. I was wondering what you guys feel are the most important features of your logs that help to identify patterns and important characteristics?
Interested to see what everyone feels is critical to look back at and what I might have left out of mine.
thanks

I have found that I stick to a STRICT pattern when it comes to my logs.
NO MATTER WHAT, I have to lay one every morning before I get out on the water, usually after a cup and a half of coffee!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

Location: Holly, MI | I'm sure there are better ways out there but I have kept mine pretty simple. I mark my lake map with a number and the date. On my computer at home the coresponding number gets date, time of day, weather, water info, lure used(size, type, color), and size of the fish. I did it all last year. I'm sure by human nature I'll rely on this short term info to a certain degree but hope as I add to it over the years it will become more valuable information.

Location: Hartford, WI | Kyle, for you I would find the Thickest log book you can find. After compiling years of fishing information, your book will now be full. Now that your book is so thick you will actually be able to stand on it and see over the boat rails and use all that hard earned info.
Sorry I had to do it.

| 1st, and most importatnt, the partner who puts you on those bucketmouths! 2nd, as you discovered at Sab Bay last year, you must come up with a name for the spot you were fishing! Seven Sluts, Butt Crack, 5 Fingers, etc, etc. 3rd, Make of boat you were in. 4th, How many LaBatts you drank the night before.

Location: Wishin I Was Fishin' | Kly what did you do to deserve all the bashing???
yikes
Pretty basic stuff I would think.
Date, Lake, Weather(skies, temp, fronts), water temp, follows, catches(times), baits that worked / didn't, trolling / casting, fishing partners, time started / left, moon phase, moon rise / set / overhead / underfoot, how bad your hangover was, how much bashing you took, how many shady moons you saw etc..........
Couldn't help it. | |

Location: Belgium | date, lake, name of spots, wind direction, weather conditions, temperature, follows + missed strikes + catches and the lure names and colors, depth at which you found them, speed (fast/slow, catsing vs. trolling), ... and also very important: try to write down some details about your fishing partner's catches or missed fish, ... to see wxhether there was a pattern or not.
Is someone a bit keen on labatt?

Location: DES MOINES, IOWA | Kly, last year was the first year, I actually did an excellent job of getting my log book filled in, without forgetting 1/2 of what happened during the day.I used a pocket tape recorder to record everything that happened, when it happened. Then transferred the info to my log book, when I had time. After fishing 12-14 hour days, and finishing the night up drinking LaBatts, I could barely remember what happened the day before.

| All right,
thanks for the great info guys!!!!
I think I have it down now let me know if this sounds right.
Entry 1 for 2004-
first order of business taken care of- after morning coffee, a log has been compiled!
1st) person with- GregM, net man required check
2nd) name of spot- Kentucky waste management area- aka (sewer) check
3rd) Ranger check
4th) Forget the night before, how many labatt's will I drink the night after catching my first ski of the 2004 season!!!! check, can log in the morning again after counting empty bottles. forget coffee start with a labatt's
well since my log book is only one fish for the year so far and not thick enough for me to stand on to look over the edge of a normal boat, it's a good thing I was in a ranger with low profile sides and I have my new 8ft thorne bros with me for extra reach. It also lays the smack down on the hookset. ha ha
bring on number 2 of the year

| Make sure you record the what doesn't work as well. Many people will on record what they moved fish on which is definitely important, but you should also not what you tried that didn't work.
After several years of info, you should be able to identify some trends of what does and what doesn't work for you on your lake(s).
