Location: Holly, MI | I had this sinking feeling and just went to a calendar..
My wife is due with our new baby (finally a girl after 4 boys) 4 days before the Muskie opener in Michigan! A couple of days in the hospital and she should come home right about in time for me to miss the first cast of the year. Before you go postal on me..I know that family should and always does come first. My wife and kids are the greatist blessing I have and I love them all dearly.. but miss the opener??
Any condolances or advice will be appriciated. I might even try to find a nanny or helper for a day if I can pull it off. I have to be gentle about my approch of the subject. Poor planning on my part 7 months ago I guess, but at least bow hunting will be safe. Anyone else had this close of timing with a major event at their household? |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Well, I would recommend missing the opener, and make it up later. my kids take ME muskie fishing now, so what an old guy like me can tell you for sure is:
There will be many more openers, and hopefully not TOO many more new family additions! |

Location: Ogden, Ut | Here's an idea from another recent dad...
'Sacrifice' the Michigan opener for an alternate trip. You would be welcome to come out here in April sometime (that should give you some wiggle room) as our season is open year-round.
You have to make a big production out of 'giving up' the opener you had planned all year on participating in. Believe me, sympathy will not be coming your way very easily! Some of the nearby states may provide an opportunity for you to do some serious fishing and you may actually get more time on the water than if you stayed local and just did the one day 'nanny' thing. Who knows, it may just give you a chance to sneak in on a MF outing trip...
Just think of how many future openers you have to look forward to fishing WITH your new family member!

| Yep, you're screwed. There are plenty of days to fish. Ever hear the saying "if momma ain't happy....ain't nobody happy" Besides it would worry me to death being gone with a baby that new. My congrates on the new one and condolences on the opener. |

BTW - look for the first pics of your customs tonight sometime. Have to make a trip to deliver some baits to a local dealer, I'll send the pics when I get back. BS

I missed the Wisconsin opener last year because my daughter was in a state singing contest.
I went out as soon as I got home(3pm) and stuck a 34-incher in the first 15 min I was out.
I never missed a opener since I can remember.
It hurt but I got on the water before dark and stuck one.
Good luck !!!
3 extra tip-ups is a bonus. |

Location: Syracuse, Indiana | I feel your pain. The birth of my youngest came early, and caused me to miss a fishing trip. He's now 4 and loves to go in the boat (although he just wants to "go fast"). Snacks, drinks, and a few toys, and he'll be happy all day while I fish. Pretty cool. |

| Not screwed. How far from fishing are you? As Mike did, take care of the family, and maybe you can get out for an hour or two. Do they even let the mom's stay in the hospital for more than a day now? I think we were out the next day! Get mom and child home, get them comfy, cater to her every need, hover over her constantly, and after about 2 days, she'll probably demand you get out of the house.
I hopefully will be missing the opener. I will be at Lake Erie for the RCL qaulifier the week before. If I miss the opener on Staurday, that means I made the cuts, will be fishing the 4th day, and looking at a big payday! hehehe. |

Location: Big Lake, MN | I know what your feeling man. I had to miss Deer hunting last season for the same reason. I haven't missed deer opener for a very long time. Just remember that if you give a little now (sacrifice) you get much in return later.
Congrats and good luck! |

Location: oswego, il | Have her mom take her to the hospital and hold her hand. You can visit the little guy after he is born, bring a picture of the musky you caught during the opener. I am sure the little guy will love it along with your wife and inlaws. Just make sure you call a lawyer bfore you go and all your prize possessions are in your truck when you get to the hopsital!
Just kidding. I hope all goes well, you will soon have a little musky fishing buddy. |

Location: Racine, Wi | Lobi, are you gonna have this one casting in the yard a week after its born? You should hire a midwife, and take them all out fishing that day. Then you can tell your daughter that she was born on the water. Come to think of it, aren't they doing in water births now?
Ok, I'm thinking to deeply on this. Congrats, and head south while you can.

| My oldest boy was born on opening day 7 years ago and I was blown away when I first saw him and never even thought that I was missing out on anything and because of birthday parties I haven't made an opening day since, But now that he is getting older we are going to start making it a tradition that we go out for his birthday.
So if your daughter is due that close to the opener it looks like you may may not make the opener for a couple of years.
Good luck with your new addition to the family, Jeff
