My main setup for pike is an XH bass Rod with a 50lb braid. When I am in an area with big musky it acts as my toss back rod if I get a follow. Due to my location, I mostly fish for pike but enjoy using musky lures <2 ounces. I recently got some pricier lures such as the Lake X Lil Bastard and a few 4" Phantom Soft Tail and have been experimenting with different leaders. I really don't want to lose any of these lures so I was wondering how heavy you guys would go with a leader without inhibiting the action of the lures.
I tried out about 14" 26lb AFW surflon tied with an FG knot and then connected with a snap to the split ring on my phantoms (I have a split ring on all my cranks/jerks) but I was getting a weird asymetrical action out of them. This setup worked great with the topwater and small bucktails, however. Previously, I have used 30lb Maxima Ultragreen but though I have landed at least a hundred pike with it I know I will get a bit off eventually.
What kind of leader would you use with this setup? I know I am definitely overthinking this but I enjoy overthinking these things, I'm sure you guys can relate.

Location: Central Pennsylvania | 6" single strand wire leader without a ball bearing swivel. Stealth tackle makes em, call them the solid wire spring leaders or something like that. I use them for my general small baits for tiger fishing. Have caught pures on these too, using xraps and a spook with the same leader.
note- I use home brewed ones but they're basically the same as the stealth tackle ones. This style leader stays tied on my bass flippin stick 24/7 when I'm targeting tigers! |

| This Spring leader from Stealth Tackle is the way to go.

It is great for all small spring baits especially gliders- it wont kill the action on any bait.

Location: Stevens Point, Wi. | For small gliders I use 6" 45# solid wire with a #5 stay-lock snap and no swivel. Any lure that spins gets a swivel attached. The wire can get bent so always have plenty of spares made up. |

Location: Brighton CO. | I make my own and for smaller lures and things that don't spin 4" -6" wire 174# no swivels and just a size 4 Stealth ring (solid ring) then spit ring your lure to the solid ring. |
