  | I’m looking at adding a couple new reels this year and was looking at the Musky Shop app and stumbled upon the Fathom 400. I use some Penn equipment when saltwater fishing but haven’t ever considered them for musky. I know they are also owned by pure fishing and seem to be similar the the Abu’s with a few small differences. I was wondering who’s tried one, how it’s held up and what they like or dislike about it? |

Location: deephaven mn | I Penn Fathom II for casting muskie baits for Tarpon. No level wind and you need to engage spool by fliping the lever'
Drag is strong and wonderful ! The reason i use this reel. It is solid reel. Not the lightest reel.
I would buy another |

  | Don't have the Fathom but have a Squall 200 with the 8.01 ratio. Have it paired up on a St.croix mojo bass slop-n-frog. I was using this combo heavily last season. Besides fishing muskies, it is my favorite way to fish, frogs and spoons in heavy weeds. I think the reel is great. Built like a tank. Not as smooth as my revo's but it feels solid. As much as I like Abu's carbon matrix drag, I believe, imo, the legendary HT-100 drag system is better. Just as smooth, with a larger range. The Fathom has the all metal body where the Squall has the graphite side plates. Also more bearings in the Fathom. I don't think you will be disappointed in choosing the Fanthom. Kdawg |

Location: Mt. Zion, IL | Looks a lot like a toro beast with different components. Penn and abu are both under the same pure fishing parent company so it is likely they share a lot of parts. |
