Just curious: does anyone try to work out in the winter months in order to get ready for open water and muskies? Out of sheer boredom and being sick of seeing a gut in the mirror I've been working out a few more times a week, doing the atkins thing HARD (thanks Worrall for pushing me to it, but I hate you that I eat this crazy crap everyday!) and I'm feeling better and better! Personally I know less Slamr = a more agile Slamr in the boat, and I can cast longer with less pain. I know there was an article in MHM a few years back about it, but does anyone really try to get in shape for chasing skies?

I am this year, because I suddenly found all my 'stuff' had fallen around my knees. I looked like Jaba The Hut in the mirror. In fact, there were portions of me I was not familiar with. At all. Moved in while I wasn't looking, so to speak.

Sue didn't say a thing, but she was a newly wed, too. I guarantee, the old diet bat would have come out eventually. (BIFF!!!) Now she has me headed to Fleet farm Tuesday to buy an exercise bike, jogger thingy so I continue to firm up the flab.

I ice fish, and use a hand auger. I heat with wood, and Split the wood and toss it down into the basement myself. That doesn't get it though, I need more exercise. At 51 going on 52, I want to live forever. That's the plan. So far, so good!

Steve,
I'm going to give you my opinion, even though you didn't ask for it. DO NOT DO THE ADKINS DIET AND EXERCISE (at the same time)!! Not sure if you knew this or not. the adkins pretty much robs your body of carbs, hence leading to weight loss. if you don't have carbs (energy) and you work out...you'll be visiting your local funeral home sooner than one may think. and some think that the fat reserves will burn faster when you exercise and are on the adkins, but your body doesn't burn it that fast. what happens is your body just shuts down. well it's hard to explain, but email me if this doesn't make sense. Maybe this is common knowledge? I don't know. Just don't want to see you guys hurt.

Ouch! You hit the nail on the head. First off, I've been smoke free since New Years Day. I did the cold turkey program: no Zyban, no nicaderm, nicorette, nickoftime, nickleback, just shear spite and meaness. Ok, so I'm past the cravings for the most part. But it was really hard.

So now I got myself a little eating disorder and have never dieted before in my life. I'm lost! Thinking about a diet just makes me wanna eat more. I weigh in at 220 right now at 6'3". I'm thinkin 205 for ideal weight..

I would love to start on the iron. But it seems like I'm worn out from all these addictions. Someone once told me addiction is like being on fire, you run into the water to put out the flames,,,and you drown!!!

WV, will you be my personal trainer? .................lol

Hey Raz..I am about the same build. I have pudged up to 220 this winter and I never hear the end of it from my wife. When I got out of the AirForce 13 years ago I was 185 and 6% bodyfat. I could dunk a B-Ball with one step. Now..I would be lucky to touch the rim!! Getting old stinks! I stopped playing basketball because of the young guns beaten me up. Now about this same time every late winter, I try to hit the ex bike every day and lift weights (lite now, no bulk work), just to keep up my strength. My biggest problem is eating. I love to eat :)... How does the Adkins thing work as far as keeping the belly full? I know I could eat 3 big steaks before I get full. I always want the carbs. Do you still have major cravings?

Come On Spring!!!

Way to go Raze!!!! on the quiting of those useless nicotine inhalers. (cigerettes) I am trying to go cold turkey as well, but MAN is it tough. I have cut down considerably, but I need to be done in 1 1/2 months for my wedding, and so I don't kick the bucket earlier than necessary.
As far as diets go, don't need one. As far as lifting, could do a little, but I'll get out the row boat in the spring and battle some waves. That seems to work. Any of you that know me though, know that I don't have much fat to burn.
Bring on the open water.

I went from 5'6" 220 and very pugy to 5'6" 165 in about 5 months eating a modified atkins, and working out about an hour and a half a day. I will tell you being able to bend over and tie my shoes and not seeing stars is awesome. We definately need the carbs, when working out. Otherwise we are defeating the purpose. A basic diet for me now consists of a coffee mug full of rasin bran in the morning and some orange juice, for lunch I have a couple of tuna sandwiches, and for dinner a steak, chicken breast, ribs, you get the point. I cut out the heavy starch potatoes and other type things with my dinner meal, just the entre. Through out the day I munch on apples, oranges, a grapefruit, and celery.
The coolest thing about the diet is that now that I am on it and working out somewhat religiously I feel 100% better. I would say the most important thing that you need to do is change your carb in take, use whole grain bread, eat wild rice rather than white rice, you get the point, complex carbs. Secondly, get up and eat that breakfast, when I dont eat breakfast I don't get hungry later in the day, when I do eat breakfast by noon I am starving and I get the shakes, metabolism working. I appluad all of you that are taking the time to get in shape and healthier.
The coolest thing in the world was when a couple of girlfriends of mine were checking out my muskie pictures, they looked at the picture of the 55 I caught a couple of years ago and weren't impressed at all, but then they looked at the picture of the 50 from this year and I was 50 lbs lighter with six pack abs, I thought they were gonna start muskie fishing right then, it was awesome.

Good luck with the diets,
MuskyDan

Tonight is the night. I am headed for the basement and starting the weight training again. You can see how much physical labor I am doing here at work right now. I am feeling a little soft. I am getting real sick of being sore for two days just because I did a little manual labor. I tend to not be as nervous and twitchy when I weight train also. That could be the lack of cigarettes or chew also. 4 years with no smokes and 2 without the chew. Cold turkey on both. Two of the best moves I have made.

I started my workout regimen at the Milwaukee bait swap. Man, was my elbow sore the next day! hehehe

Seriously, I gotta do something, too. I'm at 220 for the first time ever, had to start wearing 36 waist pants, and my heels hurt if I'm on them all day. I'll just do what I've done before. That includes watching what I eat, and spending lot's of time dog training. I get a pretty good workout when in the field for 2 hours 3 & 4 times a week. Lot's of miles in the high grass will get that heart rate up there. Should be down to 200 in a couple months. Maybe less by the end of the summer.

First of all, I like the atkins diet for me, I have lost 25lbs+ in the last 4 months. BUT I don't recommend it for anyone else, its hard, and I KNOW its not good for your body in the long run. I DONT eliminate all carbs, but take in just enough to get rid of the shakes and weariness that I get when I dont take in any carbs.
I have problems keeping as strict as I need to for a workout regimen alone to help me to lose weight. The atkins diet food is just nasty after a very short time, but I want to get down to my fighthing weight of 190 if at all possible. Thats only another 27lbs, piece of cake right?
For anyone looking for motivation to shed a few lbs., let me just say this:
I ballooned to 265 a few years back after the fishing season ended....lost 40lbs before the next season, and was spry as a psycho ninja in the boat....better balance, better endurance to fish all day, was easier to bend over to fig 8, and I even had the nerve to take my shirt off a few times in the heat. I want to be at 200lbs (17 more to go!) before May 1, and at 190 by the end of the summer, then I'll be feeling PERFECT!
Played volleyball with all younger guys, was feeling old, slow and angry that my big ole body doesnt move like it used to.....more motivation!

Try the divorce diet, that is what got me into the gym again, but I went from 220 to 160 in just 4-5 months after my divorce. Now I am at that fighting weight, actually gaining weight again, but in a positvie way. More mass in the biceps, and about 17 less chins.

I am also starting my workout tonight. It is not to lose weight however, but to gain weight instead! When the wind blows hard enough in the summertime, and I almost go overboard, I think it's about time to put some weight on. The almost going skiing part when hooking into a big fish is another eye opener. My hopes are to put on a few pounds of muscle, and hopefully that will allow me to get hooks into those fish that I failed at this year.

I'm right there with you Travis. Maybe a pool to see who puts on more LBs Tuffdaddy, or the Ciscokid. LOL. We can call it the wet noodle contest.
Although, I must say, I have never been blown overboard, or even close to that. Must have been a Typhoon. heh heh heh.

The closest thing to a work out I've had all winter was walking around the Milwaukee Musky Show! I just got my bottle of Ultra Carb from the mailman today.

How about getting a diet/exercise person to do a chat for us? Might help some of us that don't have a clue about proper exercise and diet.

At 6' and 215lbs, I could use help also.

I normaly work so hard that I don't need to exercise. But after this long layoff after my operation and already losing 15 Lbs just from the operation I will have to start exercising this spring to get my strenght back and maybe lose a couple more Lbs. At 6'3" and now 240 I can lose onother 15 to 25 Lbs.

My wife had a baby girl 6 months ago and lost the weight using the South beach diet book. It's kinda like the Atkins but you slowly incorporate good carbs back into your diet. I started 3 weeks ago and lost 13lbs and hit my target weight. The diet rocks because you can eat until your full. You do need to stay away from sugar, soda, pasta, potatoes, no bread!! Example day:

Morning Eggs and turkey bacon, v8, fruit

 Snack yogurt or string cheese

lunch cheesburger no buns and chicken breast, salad with a hard boiled egg

snack cashews or pastacios, fat free pudding

Dinner Steak, pork, chicken, beef, fish all you can eat VEGtable and a salad. Good luck!

Oh yea beer isn't good either....but f that I need my beer just switch to the light stuff

I went on the "todd can't have 4000+ caleries a day anymore" diet plan. I also bought a treadmill and a weight set. I wanted a bowflex but I got such a deal on the weight machine I could not pass it up. I try to use it 3-5 times week depending on my schedule. It really makes a difference, especially with stamina.
