what causes trailer sway at highway speeds?
is it usually that the weight is too far towards the back of the trailer?

i've got a relatively low-slung trailer (89 rangertrail) and my truck (00 ford ranger) has the oversized tires on the off-road package, causing my receiver hitch to be higher than standard. would getting one of those hitches that lower the ball down help to bring more weight onto the tongue and therefore decrease the swaying? (it only sways a bit and mostly at over 65mph if wind starts it up or a semi pushes it toward the side.)

when loading gear into the boat, is there a preferred pattern? front-to-rear? center first? etc.

thanks!

Lambeau, yes indeed you have too much weight to the back of the trailer. You need more tongue weight. Lower the hitch height or move the boat forward on the trailer. You could move more weight to the front of the boat but this would be the wrong way to correct your problem. This would cause poor boat performance at best. The best for you would be to lower the hitch.

I second the motion!

LOL!!

Seriously, get a reciever hitch with a drop to make the trailer frame so it sits as close to level as possible.

Also, if you are towing from the bumper, a reciever hitch will improve towing performance, you'll notice it right off the bat.

Your truck being a smaller one also makes the potential for sway greater. When towing my 692 with my Dodge Dakota, trailer sway was a real problem as I crested hills or on curves, or when a semi passed. The way this was solved was to move some weight forward in the boat when towing. Actually the fix that worked the best for me was to go to a full size pickup.

You don't need to be that extreme though! LOL!!
