This is going to be my first of many posts I’m sure, as I’m just getting into the sport with a lot to learn still.
Anyways, my setup that I’m curious about, is a Shimano Compre 8’6” XXH with a Daiwa Lexa 400 6.3:1 paired with 80lb braid. It’s my first Muskie setup, and I feel like it can handle anything really well, but I haven’t tried pounders yet. What would the max bait size be for this setup ya think?

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Sould handle about anything if the XXH rating on that rod is correct, I've not held one of those. The reel's fast retrieve may give you a little trouble with really big blades. |

| I have that reel on a TI Mega Heavy I bought for rubber. I did throw double tens with it one day and the reel was OK, not great. But, the rod is too stiff for that light of lure. I |

Location: Mt. Zion, IL | pounders will be fine on that. Nupe on here has a few of those shimano rods and likes them for pounders. |

| That's a pretty good starter set up. Can't really get a single "do-all" combo, but can have a "doable-all". Like Steve said, might tire out a bit throwing big blades, but will appreciate the line pick up on rubber. You'll be buying more combos in the future, so use this set up with a bunch of different stuff, and you will find out what you like and don't like about it, with various baits. Then you'll know what you want in a combo for specific uses. |

Location: Western U.P. | The weight range for your rod should be printed on it by the manufacturer. If you stay with lures under that max weight, you should be fine. Consistent overloading of a rod can, and eventually will, cause the blank to fail/break. |

| are you sure it is a xxh rod?
the shimano website has the 8 foot 6 model classified as a xh and rated for 12 oz..

Would probably be able to cast pounders, depending on how conservative the rating is but i would expect a magnum dawg to be closer to the sweet spot of the rod
a limiting factor of your setup is the braid. 80lb is good for mag dawgs butpushing it for pou ders. 100lb would have been more appropriate for protection against backlashes. |
