Location: Duluth | Yesterday, was driving back from a trip to Copper Harbor and stopped for a bite to eat other side of Ironwood. Bar was quiet and fella next to starts talking to me, usual stuff, why you in the area, what you do etc. Muskie comes up and we have a very long and good discussion of all things muskie, which brings me to the point of this post.
This man was a history teacher, and I brought up some things I've learned from reading Larry Ramsell's post and books. Randy, the fella I was talking to, was not aware of who Larry is, and I was struggling to find a parallel in another field...then it hit me that Larry is like the Noam Chomsky of muskie fishing.
He' still active, incredidly engaging with random strangers, have a massive body of work; that stands alone in its depth and bredth of research. Time dedicated to chase downt the validity of sources. Longitudinally, both have been contriversial for their opinions but most often vindicated by time.
Just a thought |

| I think Larry Ramsell should be very flattered. Chomsky is one of the great "thinkers" of our time. |

Location: Athens, Ohio | Among Mr. Ramsell's many accomplishments: he traveled to West Virginia to help form Chapter 9 of Muskies, Inc. with Bill Crane. Just for that, I will be forever Grateful, as I've been a member there for many years and have met there some of the finest folks put on earth. m |

| Anarchist, anti capitalist, north Vietnamese supporter (in north Vietnam) during the war, Mao, Marx and Stallin apologist, Noam is a heck of a guy. How could a humble Muskie fisherman measure up to all that. |

| Well, Chomsky is often described as the leading American linguist, don't think he would take exception to that. |

| I have followed some of the lectures/interviews given by Chomsky over the years, I have found him to be a dangerous type.
He is frim in his beliefs and with the type of hard convictions that gave Lenin/Stalin and the likes of Mao the fortitude to "remove" people by the millions to achieve their utopian vision of the common good.
His defense of Paul Pot who committed geocide on Cambodia, is indefensible.
There, and with no "ist" or "isms" used.
But I digress, how about that fall Muskie fishin' |

Well, one story I heard this week kind of sums up musky fishing. Two guys competing in a big musky tournament here in Oneida County landed a nice musky on the first day. They were very excited, got it unhooked in the net and were trying to get the stickered bump board in place, find the right playing card to display, etc., when they let the hoop on the net dip. Musky promptly jumped out of the net and slowly swam away. Sunday morning they were laughing as they told the story but guys fishing within ear shot of them on Saturday said the sound coming from the boat was definitely not laughter. |

| Went to LOTW last week, fished maybe 2 1/2 -3 days for musky.
Boated (6) 37 1/2" to 47 1/2".
Caught a 40" while fishing for smallies- # 3 blue fox... lightest tackle I brought- no leader. Fireline...
Thought it was going to cut me off or break the pole.
She cut the lure off in the net!
The 37 1/2 was trolling a Depth Raider she or he was a fat..... fat one and was the hardest one to get in the net. Thought for the longest time it was a rock, then a log because I could move it some... but when the log moved sideways I knew.
Almost sunk a boat last Tuesday, got guides for the rest of the trip.
Thats the best I can do. |

Location: Athens, Ohio | Anyway, Larry remains a couple cuts above the rest, and I hope one day to get to meet him.
I blew off Piedmont Tuesday, everything around here was socked in with fog. Made it up there Wednesday and hit some of my favorite spots with some of my favorite baits. It was a sunnier day than I'd been promised, saw no fish. My baits needed the exercise, though! m |

Sounds like what I guy I have fished with a few times this year. He has only been married for a year and while his wife grew up in a family that fishes and hunts, they did not musky fish. He tells her that musky fishing is not about catching but practicing and perfecting your casting. More truth than poetry in that. |

I've no idea who this person is.
He hasn't had the influence over people like some have like the ones throwing out the labels above like they have Tourettes, dividing this nation. |

| I don't know who this other guy is, but I'm glad to be among the many who know Larry Ramsell personally. I was fortunate enough to fish out of his guide boat several times many years ago as a beginner in the sport. When it comes to all-things-musky there's not a guy in the world that I have more respect for. The man is not just a treasure trove of historical knowledge, but has always been a great mix of professional yet personal interactions. |

I too remember being lined up with all the other kids in school, in the gym, and getting vaccinated. No big deal. Everybody did it. Although, if my memory serves, those vaccine guns didn't have needles. They just shot the juice into your arm with a shot of air.

| A recent Chomsky quote about muskie fishing: "People who refuse to accept MUSKY FISHING, I think the right response for them is not to force them to, but rather to insist that they be isolated. If people decide, ‘I am willing to be a danger to the community by refusing to ACCEPT MUSKIE FISHING,’ they should say then, ‘Well, I also have the decency to isolate myself. I don’t want a MUSKIE, but I don’t have the right to run around harming MUSKIE FISHERMEN.’

| “If you sell me a Lund 2075 Pro-V Musky XS, we have perhaps made a good bargain for ourselves. But there are effects of this transaction on others, which we do not take into account. There is more pollution, the price of gas goes up, there is more congestion on the water.”
