I tied some sweeeeet looking baits tonight, and I got to wondering, how durable is hackle? It looks sweet in the water when I throw flies for muskies, but I know that they can be kinda fragile. Has anyone thrown Funky Chickens, and baits of that nature, and if so, how is the durability? Is it similar to bucktails and maraboo?

My only experiance is with the feathers (hackle?)hanging off the back of the Tony Accetta "Pet" spoons. They are an awesome spoon for pike but the feathers do get chewed up after many hits but seem to take a pretty good beating. On the Accetta spoon the single hook is screwed to the blade so it is easy to remove it and re-tie on some more.
Not Hackle related but if you can get your hands on a "Pet" spoon or two try them out. They flutter fall with the single hook up and go thru brush, branches and slop like you won't believe. The sizes you will want will be a 17 and an 18 (18 is bigger). They are kinda hard to find but I have found them on saltwater sites. Awesome action spoon.

Hackle is pretty strong if you over wrap it,you also could try icelandic sheep for a marabou sub or icelandic fox. These breath really well and are very durable.

Hackle is great and more durable then you would think I fish a lot of hackle and haven't had any problems with durability at all at least not with the feathers. The only durability problem you'll have is with the post or the hooks due to all the muskies that will be eating up your hackle tails. You may have to cut the hooks out of a nice fish or have the main post on your bucktail kink well before you'll have to worry about the hackle getting worn out.

Thankd Matt!!! That's good to hear. I spent the last 2 nights tying up a bunch of hackle tails. They look freaking AWESOME. But I just wanted to make sure that they aren't just pretty to look at. I can't wait to throw these suckers!!!!
