Location: Musky Tackle Online, MN | I'm looking at ball bearing swivels for the leaders that I'm making. Does anyone know if there's a big quality difference in Sampo versus imported ball bearing swivels? I'm looking at my new Moore's Lures catalog. And the price difference in the same size and same strength swivel is 70 cents each. I bought the imported ones. But I don't want to go cheap if the quality is going to suffer.
Also...I know ball bearing swivels aren't necessary for all applications. But some people will use ball bearings on all of their leaders. What's the reason for this? I'm looking at a $1.65 versus $0.12 difference when going to the Crane barrel swivel for a swivel that actually has a greater pull strength.
I guess with what little I know, I can't see a good reason to use a ball bearing swivel over the Crane barrel swivel for my jerkbaits when the Crane's are only 12 cents.

| For Jerks and cranks, just use a welded ring. You don't need a swivel at all since they do not roll. For bucktails etc. I would spring for the extra 70 cents for the Sampos. Bad enough to lose a $15-$50 bait due to a cheesy swivel but the fish you will lose will not likely be a small one. | |

| If you are making your own, buy the best. You can reuse swivels almost indefinitly. I personally use both a crane and Berkely on all the leaders I make. Maybe it is the trapper side of me, but if one swivel fails, I know I have protection out there. And it will eventually happen to you, and if you are catching dink fish it won't matter, but on the fish of a lifetime, well, are you willing to take that chance for the savings of the price of a swivel? Tie up a couple variations (i.e. one swivel, two, just split rings) and try them on your favorite baits, see how much it affects action and I would be suprised if you don't go with a two swivel setup. Oh yea, try them on trolled baits too, when you run multiple lines and that large, running fish or not quite tuned crankbait starts thing a twistin', you will come to appreciate the extra swivelige. Good luck. | |
