I am looking for a low profile reel for the wifes smaller hands. Have any of you guys had any experience with the Diawa Triforce TF150i or the Megaforce MF150i reels? I am especially concerned about the drag systems. Any other input on other brands is also welcone. Will be using either 50# Spectron or 65# Power Pro, and would like to get at least 100 yards on the spool. Thanks in advance.

Todd,

I use the Curado by Shimano spooled with 50# Cortland Spectron and have no problems handling big fish with it.

I started my wife out with a 55o1 right away and she is a small person. Those low-type bass reels are not made to stand-up to musky fish`in in my opinion.Even the best Shimano`s never made a season for me and the line capacity is to small and superline is very hard on those little buggers.Beware of #50 superlines if she is not an accomplished caster cause it sucks to untangle.I use the 65# tuff for the wife its a hair wetter but a breeze to get over runs out!Keep her plugg`in, thats great!

Garcia has the new D5 series for this year, I guess it is similar to the C5 mag except it is set lower on the reel seat and has a smaller daimeter... Here is the link..maybe that can describe it better then me.. http://www.abugarcia.com/Splash_Detail.cfm it is available in both 5600 and 6600...

I have used the Shimano Curado, and it held up to landing some decent fish (50+,48,46), but spooled with 65# Powerpro it seemed really rough casting. I think the rod has a lot to do with fighting the fish, and the drag system for the Curado seemed more than adequate. For small hands you might try the Calcutta 250. It is a lot smoother with braid and because the 65# diameter is about the same as 17# mono it will hold at least 100 yds after backing.

Todd, by all means get the garcia torno 3003. Same guts as the round reel. You can get them on ebay brand new in the box for 20 bucks off retail, that's around 65 bucks. It will outcast any baitcaster you have with 65lb power pro on it. I have one and it handles everything my 7ft st. criox bucktail rod can throw.

I had the Triforce Z-150. I bought it due to the extra capacity (200/10 or 12?). It was a good value, but had a standard, single stack wet type drag system. It was smooth and even (great for light lines), but won't produce more than about 4-5 lbs of top end drag. Not great for Muskie. If you're looking for a low profile reel, with the capacity and strength of a round reel, there are some damn good reels available. Unfortunately they are almost all discontinued models, but are available from E-Bay:
Abu XLT II or III
Abu Mag/Ultra Mag II or III
Daiwa PMF(35 and 53?)
Daiwa PS (53?)
Quantum Pro 4
Quantum QD1420/1420MG
Shimano Bantam 50
Shimano BSM2200W (FS)
And some others I can't remember at the moment. These were all solidly built reels and some had nice features not found on the smaller round reels like a clicker and magnetic cast control. And most can be had for under 60$ (sometimes the Abu Ultra Mags go higher).

FYI....

The Calcutta and the Curado have the same drag. I haven't had a minute's problem with my Curado. I've cast the snot out of it for both bass and musky. I have 2 spools for it. The musky spool has  80# Power Pro and it works fine for me.
