| I'm somewhat new to the musky world and noticed some lures have very detailed paint work and often times hefty price tags to match. Do highly detailed baits attract more fish? Would the same bait painted a very basic pattern be worse off? |

| They attract fisherman first who pay for said bait. Fish care not for detailed paint jobs. |

Location: Alexandria, MN | There's an old adage regarding muskie lures....."Any color works - as long as it's black". As Todd said - detailed paint jobs attract fishermen.

Location: oswego, il | Sometimes color can be a factor but not the artistic detail. We don't throw any lures that look or act real. That's two Todds saying the same thing. Take it to the bank. |

Location: Athens, Ohio | What I've found odd is two 'identical' baits - one will catch fish, the other won't. Vibration has a lot to do with it. m |

Location: Chisholm, MN | Sounds likeyou're seeing past the gimics before it's too late You're right to question it. Beautiful paint jobs are cool and I buy them now and then but standard color baits work just as well. Color does not matter much in my opinion. It's one of the lowest factors to consider when selecting baits. Like said above, 2 identical colors of the same bucktail - but one catches the fish. Sometime you can tell why because one of them grinds more or has a better sound and one is smoot and doesn't sound like much. Best thing to do is catch a fish on a bait, then catch some more on it. It will then be broken in and you'll catch even more. |

| Case in point. I have one of those special 6” Reef Hawgs. I have painted it probably 4 different colors and patterns over the past 20 plus years and for a period of a couple years it barely had any paint left on it at all. I didn’t paint it anything fancy either. Some paint jobs were real crappy with a brush. Regardless of color, it still catches fish. Its all about the action. When I give it a tap I have no idea what it will do. Sometimes it goes side to side, sometimes up and down, sometimes it goes deep and sometimes it comes to the surface. It’s a bait that’s always on a rod or in the “on deck” spot. In this case I know action trumps color without a doubt. |
