Anyone else gonna brave the heat? Headed to the cabin in the Outing area myself. Gonna focus on mornings and evenings. Maybe trolling with the canopy up.

Hiya!!

I'll be a touch north of you in Longville area. I'll surely be out Saturday morning, but with that kind of heat, I'm not going to bake myself out there unless the fish are moving. If the fish ARE moving (fingers crossed) I most likely be slathered up heavily with SPF 100 and trudge through with lots of water and probably a jump in the lake here and there after fishing a spot.

Might have to stop in Outing on the way home and fish a little bit too... Been there once about 4 years ago...

My bigger concern is the long range forecast. We may only have a few weeks of fishing before the water is in the 80 degree range - like last year.

Some buddies of mine will be in the Longville area, so we'll be comparing notes. With the forecast being what it is, it may be a short "early" season, as the water will get warm in a hurry. Might have to invest in some more bass tackle this summer....

Yeah, could hit 80 in a couple weeks. Hope that's not the case! I will probably sit the mid day heat out but definietly going early in the AM and back out in the PM.

I don't know,...Northern MN. will be between 85-78 in the day and low to mid 50's at night for the next 2 weeks.
I don't think the water temps will be 80 anytime soon up here... Maybe the Cities.

It was 80 by the 1st of July last year and it's warmer this year.

Looks like the new MN muskie fishing season should be the Saturday before Labor Day thru the first Sunday in June.

I'm kidding. I think...

I have had a place on the chain where I live (Oneida County) for 17 fishing seasons, 6 full time. I have never seen the water this warm, this early. May have gotten close during the drought years of '04 to '10, but the lakes were way down and there was virtually no rain. Went out early this morning, temps were 77, 78 after being 10 degrees cooler last Thursday. I stopped when they hit 81, looked around for cooler water but even off the mouth of creeks it was over 80 and to my surprise the river, which has decent flow right now, was 83 to 85. I know it has been warm last few days but that was still a surprise.

Oh well, watered my lawn last night, so it should grow well. Panfishermen were doing ok in really shallow weeds.

They were, not now... this afternoon, 83 in the shallow weeds, 81 at the edge (9') on the Three Lakes Chain.. The crappie guys pretty much got skunked today. I'm surprised at the river temps tho. Maybe this afternoon/evening's downpours provide a bit of relief. Lord knows it felt great just to stand outdoors in it, until the lightning got too close for comfort (the cabin has no A/C).

Yup, definitely going to be 80 on most lakes within a week. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to fish, which is insane. I’ve been working fires steady here in northern MN because of the heat and lack of precipitation. Ready to lose my mind!

I too am hoping that rain and wind cooled things down. We got just over half inch of rain. Fortunately, most of the lightning was just north of us. Up by you I guess.

Take care of your self, sounds bad. Can only imagine what the guys out west are feeling with all those fires and no relief in sight. Saw where the drought is so bad that if the water goes much lower on LakeMead, already down over 100 feet, the Hoover Dam's ability to generate power may be greatly compromised.

Crazy. All that extra water must be in Lake Superior. Still high here. We worked on a couple jobs in the past couple years where homeowners were moving houses back from the lake because the bank was eroding due to high water.

Spring fire season is a given in minnesota whether there is a drought or not. We are abnormally dry right now, but it's very common. Usually it's done by muskie opener but not this year. Definitely stings not to be able to fish until we get some real rain. Not much rain in the forecast so I think I'll be busy for a while.

Some of it is high water, some of it is the violence of the storms. A civil engineer for the state, who has been doing it for a long time, told me that they are now replacing culverts with much larger culverts because what used to be 100 year flood events are becoming 10 year or even 5 flood events. McClain State Park on Lake Superior in the Keweenaw Peninsula started losing camp sites that had been there for decades about 25 years ago, 100 year old trees going into the lake.
Recently a biologist for the state was on public radio and said that while average rainfall is fairly stable, the way it comes has changed over the last two decades, and it has impacted forests. Instead of steady rain, we get strong heavy rains. I found that interesting because my late neighbor, a retired cop, had been saying that for years. He had no training in climate, but had tracked the rain amounts for decades and saw that pattern.
The Western states are hurting now and it is projected to get much, much worse. 40 years ago, Lee Dreyfus, former WI governor, had a reply when Western states wanted great lakes water. He said, "sure, one barrel of water for one barrel of oil, and remember, we can get oil from the gulf states. Good luck getting water." People forget there was a real effort by western states to get a pipeline from the great lakes back then.

Got a lot of thunder lightning, wind and rain.. A resort just up 45 from Thee Lakes had some tree branches fall.. Took a ride up Hwy X toward Eagle River, and there were a lot of trees down..

Got out for a good bit this morning...at the butt crack of dawn it was 76, and back to 80 by noon..

Cool night time temps in the low 50's and upper 40's should drop it down a few degrees for the next week or so, even though the highs will be 80.
Hopefully the storm rolling in tomorrow doesn't produce to much lightning/fires, Eh Kirby .

After the 3.3" downpour and a high of 94 over the past two days, it was a decent day today in the Northwoods...Around 1PM, or so another huuuuuuge line of thunderboomers rolled through, complete with wind and hail..Water is still warm, but 78 is definitely an improvement, and the forecast is optimistic. Still the sun beats down on the water for 15+ hours a day this time of year.
