Recently saw a video of guys throwing modified bass swim jigs with swimbait trailers for pike, this seems like it would be a very good method for spring downsizing and it would show them something that they don't see much. What other "odd" tactics do yinz go to for spring?

not sure that its odd or not but i have lots of action on walk the dog top waters when fish are still shallow. its seems to bother them xtra for some reason early in the year as you can get action all day. not big ones though, like old jackpots, super spooks that kind of size

ive also been experimenting casting travel routes from spawning areas, but depending on definition of spring this may or may not apply

I'm not sure whether tigers actually go through the motions of the spawn, like pures do. However, this time of year I see weird behavior such as sitting high in the water column, and also I recently witnessed tiger eating some sort of hatch off of the top of the water.

Some, but not all, Tigers go through the spawning motions. Female Tigers can actually backcross with a male muskie which can result in some crazy body patterns.

Is there anywhere I can find pictures of the offspring of such a cross?

Tigers often swim with their heads above water, I don't believe they are feeding on a hatch. I've had little to none luck catching tigers who are swimming with their heads above water. They most commonly exhibit this behavior when they are spooked, but I've seen a bunch doing it that were nowhere near anyone who might have spooked them. Fertile tigers are extremely rare, so it isn't likely they would backcross with a male muskie or pike. I spoke with Dr. Casselman and he said out of the thousands of hybrids they had examined that only a couple had poor quality eggs, the rest were sterile. Since he is one of the leading esocid authorities I tend to believe him. Just my 2 cents.

Come springtime frogs migrate back into the water from land or a nearby swamp. There will be about a week when the frogs go nuts and the fish move in. Throw a medium size firetiger Johnson Spoon with a white Berkley twin tail right up on shore and drag it into the water. Make the lure land on the terra firma, don't splash the water unless you gently hop it into the water. The very best shoreline stretches are those adjacent to inlets that are pumping warmer water into the lake. The Johnson Spoon is your best bet for not wasting a cast, it almost never catches debris like even a spinner bait might. You'll need to downsize your leader and line to ensure the little lure has good action. This hot pattern is even better in the fall when frogs leave the lake. You'll know when the migration starts because frogs will be all over the roads near lakes and swamps every night for a few days.

Frogs are like lady finger sandwiches to pike, muskies and bass.

On the topic of tigers eating stuff on top, these were all small fish (20-30"). They would just eat off the top layer, they weren't quite sticking their heads out and swimming.
