Location: Vilas County, WI | I didn't want to hijack another thread but it got my wheels turning. I'll post my question here.
Last fall I lost 3 rubber fish. The baits were smacked on the pause, set the hook, nothing. Two baits were brand new and were shredded front to rear with teeth. That lead me to believe the bait was clearly in the mouth and not a nipper. The third fish hit a Mag Dawg, from the rear. The tail was now wrapped around the head of the bait, tears in the rubber all over. Again, evidence suggested it was definitely bit.
The set up was a 9' LT Big Nasty with a Abu Beast HS, 6.2:1, 34" IPT. I'm considering switching to a Tranx 400AHG, 7.6:1, 40" IPT.
I've read other debates about gear ratio vs IPT vs picking up the slack line etc. Would switching the reel help in the situations described. I'm sure I also could improve the slack line so I'm not missing fish on the pause. So switch the reel or stop sucking as a rubber angler? LOL
Opinions? |

| I use either HG 500 Tranx's or Calcutta Conquests on my Rubber rods. In the late fall I will use a PG 500- Tranx to slow it down a bit. IF you are not throwing pounders either of those reels you mention will work, if you don't mind the size/weight there s no better reel than the 500 Tranx.... |

Thats rubber fishing.
This. Saw it a couple years ago. My nephew had just switched from a buck tail to a brand new mag dawg he had bought to fish our chain, color was something he had success with in our dark stained water. On about his third cast he did a figure 8 and just as he started to lift a musky hit. We looked at the lure and there teeth marks on both sides of a hook. About ten minutes later one hit just before the boat but didn't stay pinned, again it hit the body, not the tail. He is a good fishermen, caught hundreds of muskies but he didn't get either of those. I did put on a dawg and caught a low 40s fish after a few casts. Who knows why? |

| Logically, if the lure is all ripped up, it probably means you ripped the lure out of the fish's mouth, therefore, slack line isnt the problem in most cases. Its got alot to do with the size of the lure relative to its hooks and pure bad luck as to the rigs placement when setting the hook... IMO |

| Might as well buy a tranx just in case... hahaha! Seriously tho, I’ve had fish shred a rubber bait and not hook up somehow several times too...just part of the game I suppose. |

| Just a question but would having an xh or xxh rod be better for driving the hooks home? I ask because I sometimes toss a poseidon or bulldawg with my heavy ( no bites yet) and it casts and handles them well. Another question is how did you have your drag set? |

Location: Northern Illinois | Ha! This thread reminds me of a story. My fishing partner was throwing a black bulldog in Canada when bulldogs first came out and gets a hit 10' from the boat. Now, my partner can set a hook! He hammers the hooks and a 40" muskie comes out of the water eye level to us, bulldog in mouth. The next thing you know, he's reeling a shreaded lure back to the boat sans muskie. Since that day, he calls them "turd with a tail". |

| Posts like this give me a sense of relief as I am only running about 30% on landing fish on a Bulldog or Medussa. I use a 9' TI XXH with a Tranx 400HG. I am to the point that I would try just about anything to hook more muskies. I swear every pike that eats rubber baits gets every hook stuck somewhere. |
