| where is the proper ish place to balance a bait?
more to the front,? more to the rear? or in the middle?
what effects does the placement have on the action?

| Yea, need a bit more specifics. And in general if there was a formula for a successful bait, I'd like to hear it!! lol I would say most of my crankbaits float at least a little, and have slightly forward weight and low down acting as a ballast. Once you get into glide baits, they need to be more evenly distributed to get he lure to sink evenly or suspend evenly. The effect on action, and placement of the weight would need to be figured out depending on the lure. | |

| A popper, prop, or walk the dog bait should have all the ballast toward the tail so the nose is out of the water until you retrieve the bait. I prefer gliders to sink a bit head first, so I put lead in the back and the front with slightly more in the front. Crankbaits work best with the lead right under the center of gravity (where you can hold the bait loosely in two fingers without it tilting). So it really depends on the bait. | |
