Been out in Colorado for awhile and I have had some horrible Pizza. I don't mean it wasn't that good, I mean you made that I decided to sell it!

Where's your best pizza place? Aurilio's,.Schereville, IN, Next Door Pub Lake Geneva, Mama Mia's West Allis, Chicago Dough Company, Bradley, IL are some of my all time favorites.

This thread should have HH seeking a doctor after 4hrs.

Home Run Inn was always a favorite, but the last few time we had it it kinda sucked. Definitely not the same as it used to be. Fortunately, there is a Falco's nearby. (Falco worked for Home Run Inn, and rumor has it he stole the recipe) For deep dish, you can't beat Lou Malnati's, with Giordano's being a close second.

Aurelio's is hit or miss. Guilianos WAS good, but they're under new ownership, and the last time we were there the pizza left a lot to be desired.

I haven't been everywhere, but I can say there is no such thing as good pizza in most of the country.

Forgot about Falco's for lunch have ate there many times. Friendly staff. The Home Run Inn at Manheim and 290 isn't bad. HRI makes a frozen pizza that does not compare to the restaurant. I miss going into their office headquarters in woodridge.

Vermilion Club on V isn't bad. neither is the scenery, Todd .
Chicago Pizza must be the standard.
The best I've ever had was at a hole in the wall place near the airport in Rome and a few blocks from the Vatican.

I feel your pain... here in my neck of the woods the "best pizza argument" is among Lil Ceaser's, Pizza Hut, and Domino's. Fortunately Mike Feliu moved down here, and in '80 opened up a third Chicago Dough Company a couple miles from me. It's still being run by Mike, under the name of Rush St. Pizza. The only other really good pizza in town
comes from a food truck run by a a NYC transplant.

When I visit family in Fibland, my brother and i will make the drive from S. Elgin, all the way to J.B. Alberto's in Rogers Pk. just for the pizza.

And let's not forget Lumpy's in Eagle River..

In St. Paul, there used to be Grandpa Tony's. Fabulous pizza. Unfortunately, the next generation wasn't interested in keeping it going, and he wouldn't sell, so it closed. Now, for me, it's Rocco's. On the Minneapolis side, Leaning Tower of Pizza has been a staple since the '50s.

I think there are several “good” pizza places around here but nothing that knocks your socks off. Nothing that rivals the family joints in NY that I remember in the 70’s. The two best we’ve had here is Big Dog Pizza in West Chester and East of Chicago (closed during the pandemic). We do order from Papa John’s frequently because they are close and relatively cheap wit the specials. I don’t know of any places that makes deep dish since E of C closed. They were pretty good and very filling although my wife prefers thin crust.

The local pizza places to me are the best. One I like in DeKalb, IL is Pizza Villa. One in Macomb, IL I really liked when going to school but that was a half century ago, and probably anything would have tasted great back then!

Lou Malnati's has a great deep dish pizza. Their thin crust pizza is at best an afterthought.

Fillipo's in Mt. Zion Illinois is very good.

Used to eat at a place.in Rockford called Barnaby's as a kid after going to Rockford Speedway. Not sure if it's there anymore.

Maria's in Morris Illinois is worth stopping.

A Chicago Pizza place opened a big place in Milwaukee. Apparently we cheese head lack appreciation for whatever it is that attracts FIBs to that deep dish glop. Didn't last long despite a big investment. My daughter in law is from Chicago area was so excited, arranged for a small party there for son's birthday. I guess the best thing I could say about the deep dish was that it was edible. Barely. Beer was cold though.

I've got to get out more!!

Mouth is just watering reading this thread!

Here in the twin cities as well and nothing...absolutely nothing for me gets me close to my childhood birthday pizza place... Shakey's Pizza. They are still on the west coast I believe and I had that one time out there...was not the same.

So now...I'd have to give a nod to Old World Pizza (owner used to run Pizza Factory) and Cossetta's Pizza in St. Paul. Cossetta's used to be a really good inexpensive Date Night. $2.95 per slice and the slices were sizable enough you only needed one. So two slices, a couple of sodas (oh alright... POP!) for $10 back in the late 80's early 90's... Now it is still a good deal by my wife usually goes for the Italian side of the line while I still go for basic sausage or pepperoni by the slice.

When I was a little kid there was a Shakey's in Aurora, IL. I am sure the pizza was good but this was all about the atmosphere. Laurel and Hardy, 3 stooges playing on TV's and live funny entertainment and games. It was 5 minutes away.

Man, you guys brought back memories! I don't even remember what the pizza was like, but loved going to Shakey's. Big clunky, wood picnic type tables, those funny peanut shaped balloons with the little cardboard feet, and usually a banjo player. Always a good time for a little kid int the '70s.

I live in Brighton witch is the most northeast suburb of Denver to get good pizza we go to the west suburbs 35 40 miles to Randi's, Beau jo's, or Woody's. Last night we made home made and it was BAD! Yuch! My favorite is Chicago thin witch is cut in squares. Sammy's in Northern MN or Sayner pub in Sayner WI are examples of this.

Strange, but I was never much of a deep dish guy, but then, I wasn't born in IL.

So true about Shakey's. Todd we used to bring the kids to that one in Aurora. Good times!

If you ever are in the Phoenix area, try Organ stop Pizza..

Not the best pizza in the world, but a neat venue with a huge pipe organ, the player takes requests, lots of little extra instruments all around the room...

Phoenix has new york style pizza. Not my favorite. Had one pizza in Sierra Vista cheese pepperoni onions on half and got a cheese pepperoni onions and ham.

I will start the argument. I used to make pizzas as a teenager for Suzie's Pizza in Plano, IL which is now in Yorkville. Good pizza but if your going to out onions on a pizza save yourself the cost and hassle and just eat the onion.

Here in the twin cities,,,Carbones on Randolph,,the owner is a long time Muskies Inc member and the rearing and stocking chairman and ihas been instrumental in getting alot of the Muskies that get stocked locally and a key figure in getting white bear lake turned into a muskie lake.

Apart from that the pizza is fantastic!!!! Carbones on Randolph is the original Carbones.

Every visit to the Twin Cities was to crash in the hotel, before returning to Duluth.

Nowadays, being retired and all, and having family recently moving up there, I'll definitely check them out when I visit in May!

Thanks for the reccomnedation!!

Well Todd, afraid that the Italians would disagree with you on the onion. It is a staple on Neopolitan style pizza, right there with olive oil. We had an elderly gentleman who hunted from our deer camp for a couple seasons, emigrated from Italy in the 1930s and he used onion on his version that he baked in our wood stove. Some fine eating.
I suppose you don't like garlic either.

I'm fortunate and my wife is Sicilian and makes homemade pizza from her families recipe. Her parents, who passed a couple of years ago, owned a restaurant in tosa until selling it in the early 90's. Pre-COVID, Christmas gatherings were always a big to do about the pies, followed by cannoli.

I used to make pizzas flipped the dough up in the air and all that stuff. Veggies have.a ton of moisture and keeps the cheese from browning with the crust. Raw onion is overbearing and unless it's cooked in really well dominates the taste. Put raw onion on anything you might as just well eat the onion.

I like garlic. If you ever go to a portillo's with an expanded barney's menu, there are only a few, aurora, bloomingdale and one buy midway on harlem, get the chicken cicilano. It's by far my favorite italian dish and loaded with garlic so much so you will get the garlic sweats 30 minutes later, you will stink everyone will smell your stink, your bed will stink. It's worth it and by all means get a piece of the best chocolate cake you will ever eat. It will ruin chocolate cake for you it did for me.

If anyone is fishing the Moen Chain, the Birchwood Lodge is a long time northwoods bar and grill with very good pizza, make their crust from scratch, fresh toppings. One that my son and I get is the Greek Pizza, with gyros meat, etc. They have a dock you can leave your boat at and during the summer picnic tables with umbrellas for a nice day overlooking the lake. Take a break from fishing on a Sunday afternoon in the summer and live music on the outdoor stage.

The two ingredients that make an outstanding pizza are a great sauce and the right dough recipe. I suppose an argument could be made for cheese and the right oven. After those, it's personal preference for what ingredients you prefer.

My thought as well, but maybe if your work making pies all day, the smell stays with you? Kind of like when my son was swimming in college. Over winter break they swam 4 hours a day and he said everything smelled like chlorine.
He knew toast and eggs didn't really smell like chlorine, but that is what he smelled.

So wait Todd, onion is no good because its overpowering, but garlic is not? In language you will understand...c'mon, man!?

It's not overpowering like raw onion. Smell maybe but not taste. Not even in the same zip code.

Anyone have a good suggestion for the Hayward area? By good, don't reply Coop's because . . . yeah. Frankie's is okay but I'd like other options.

My answer involves a multitude of factors for the Hayward Pizza award, but I must say the most tastiest Wisconsin pizza was served to me was at the Little Red Bar at Dettloff's Indian Trail Resort. Put your Louis Spray views away, and step back in time. The Muskie surroundings were fantastic as was the Pep's frozen pizza prepared in a Wisco 421 pizza oven. This is the only Hayward location I ever ate pizza. I was a FIB from the southside and grew up eating some of the best pizza. Pep's is my new frozen and after my Hayward trip I bought the Wisco 421 (best Pizza oven...ever)! My favorite Chicago deep dish is Lou Mahlnatti's, but I also love Giordano's. Here is where I get goofier....thin crust hands down is Fox's Sausage Pizza (Oak Lawn is/was better than Orland Park) and it has been 40+ years since eating at the Western ave,. location. I'm glad I'm out of that sewer of a city, but am now in the Minneapolis area sewer!!! I've traveled a fair amount, and the NY style pizza is still and will always be hideous to me
(numerous attempts), and I can't recall a pizza I somewhat liked west of the Mississippi. Give Pep's thin crust double down sausage a shot on your next adventure to God's Country! https://pepsdrafthaus.com/

My local tavern used to have Peps, and I agree - for a frozen pizza it is really good.

It’s been a few years, but Ray Jays on County B was respectable but another planet away from what I used to get years ago in Chicago. We usually make our own these days.

DeMarinis in South Shore used to be my go-to place in Milwaukee for a number of years until the family split into two joints. Now when I visit it is Crossroads in Muskego.

Here in the twin cities, the original Savoy's in downtown St Paul made an awesome pie. They are gone and nothing has really replaced them yet in my mind. Cossetta's is good though.

Good call on Ray Jays in the Hayward area. I think it is the best around those parts.

Now I have a place in St Germain so still looking around there.

You can't go wrong with any of the top 10 in the burbs/Chi... probably even 20
I wouldn't know about thin crust around here because I don't bother with it

Ray-Jays is really good. Regular pizza, any way you want it.
But...sometimes they offer their Prime Rib Pizza. It's different, and it is delicious. Might even be better the second day.
But yah, search our Ray Jays.

Dino's on Higgins in Chicago is pretty dang good for deep dish or thin crust. They have a thin crust BLT pizza that is awesome. Always try some different places when seeing family down there. I always get the deep dish pizzas but ironically none of my Chicago friends and or family are into deep dish and prefer the thin crust. It seems like Chicago is famous for their deep dish yet residents of Chicago eat thin crust more often than deep dish. That being said, Dino's, Lou's, Giordano's (stuffed pizza), Burt's Place, Pequods are all worth trying.

Filippo's in Mt. Zion is awesome, but the last several times I've been home visiting they are never open. Not sure what the deal there is. My favorite though is Mama's in St. Paul. Found it by accident pet sitting for my girlfriend's friends.

When fishing the North Webster area lakes the Barber Motel has great pizza. Well.worth it. The Frog in Syracuse is decent but they eye candy much better especially when there are bachelorette parties or even better Halloween.

One good thing about being a FIB is the pizza. I live in Rockford, IL and we have some good local Pizza places like Lino's and Sam's. We also have Giordano's and LM's. When I go to the City I like Gino's East.
