Since I got hooked on trolling, I'm wondering what the Pro's use for downriggers? I have a 17ft glass (I will drill holes into) with a 85hp, 6hp kicker that I've been using with dipsy's and boards. I would like to purchase downriggers but there are many pro's & cons out there. Canon, Big John's or Scotties? Need some expert advise....

I use the Canon brand. I have a set on my Patriot 2050. Nice rigs!

I also have Canon downriggers. The UniTroll model. Here's a link to how I rigged my boat. There is a pic of Steve's setup somewhere.

I also use Cannon Unitrolls (2), and have mounted them on the rotating base plate. When I got mine, they came with a 2 foot fixed boom. I paid the bucks and upgraded to the longer telescoping boom. Definitely this was a good decision. They aren't too heavy, and are easy to take on and off the boat. One of the reasons that I like the Unitroll, is that they have the heavier wire, and boom... they're just missing the motor. (They are upgradable.) The Easi-trolls are likely okay for occasional non-commerical use, but can't be upgraded. (At least they couldn't be upgraded the last time I checked.). I only run them at certain times of the year. I find that you don't need the weight of the power models for muskie fishing. Perhaps if you are fishing Lake St. Clair with a salmon type set-up, the power models would be a blessing, but not for occasional use.

I use the Cannon Unitrolls also. They have the 5ft boom that can be lengthened or shortened. For the price you can't beat them.

I also use the small mini trolls for the back of the boat. I run a Ranger620VS so the small ones will cover the back sides of the boat. The longer Cannons cover 5ft out from the boat. This spread allows me to cover lots of water with the downriggers.

Add in the dipsys, planner boards, stackers and you have a spread that you can't keep up with when the fish are hitting.

Down East rod holders are one of the best you can buy. Versitility is almost unmatchable with these holders. I know of two other rod holders that have broken with rods in them. Both resulted in the loss of the rods, holders and fish. I will not mention the names but they are plastic.
