Recently I've seen a video of a guy using a canoe knot instead of crimps, as well as another guy using a centauri knot, does this affect the integrity of the leader? I don't mind spending less money and getting the same number of leaders if it doesnt effect the strength.

My second part of this is me wondering whether you can do a uni to uni connection of your mainline and your leader line instead of using a barrel swivel? *my reason for this is because i feel like the fish are seeing my line and i want to tie some longer leaders (24 ish inches) and i think if i were to do the uni to uni i could reel the knot through 1 or 2 guides and in turn be able to figure-8.

I have been tying mainline to my 100 lb hard mono leader with a Sebile or FG knot. It’s the lowest profile knot you can use to connect them. You can run it through the tip pretty easy with no damage. I then tie a tarpon loop knot to a swivel on the other end and attach my staylock snap. If you don’t want the weight of a swivel you can just tie the tarpon loop and attach the snap to it.

This setup has worked great for me for years. There is no weight of a swivel on the end of the leader/line connection which eliminates the constant dropping of the line on pauses caused by the weight of the swivel. If you use the swivel it is also much closer to the bait which is better as well. The tarpon loop has never failed me. I tie it and then put a drop of super glue on it and it’s good to go. If the tarpon guys can boat 200 lb tarpon without failure, it’s good enough for any musky that swims. Good luck!

ive tried the fluoro and the high pound hard monos and my favorite leaders and best success has come on what most would consider 'light' leaders. i use 50# 1x7 surfstrand titanium non coated in simple black. its thin, hard to see and silly kink proof. i use 70# hardware. its quite small by comparison, so it doesnt weigh baits down or negatively impact action. i usually make mine 9" or 11" depending on the rod they will be used on.

as for the second question, ive come to prefer the smaller diameter leaders for being 'discrete' rather than going longer. i dont like anything going through the guides besides bobber stops. trolling rods are the only time i use long leaders (24") and thats simply to keep weed-fouling off the baits.

i like my hardware , especially swivels on all my setups. a few of my guest rods and my trolling/sucker rods are spinning, so i really want that twist resistance.

i prefer crimps. if you take the tag end and run it back through the crimp (so the wire is inside the crimp 3 times) it is incredibly strong. they are neat and clean.
