Looking for pros and cons on how effective this raingear is. Oldest daughter got me some for Christmas and I guess I'm too old fashion. How can that material be rainproof!

Thanks

I bought a pair of Frogg Toggs last year and I love them.  They are great for hot weather use. They are light, cool and really do keep you dry.  The only negatives are that the jacket is very short and has no pockets.  I got a pair of bibs so the shortness of the jacket is no big deal.  If they wear out or get lost I will replace them with another pair without question.

They are amazingly waterproof and very breathable. Perfect for warm weather.

I love mine, very waterproof and comfortable to wear. Worked well under my Deer hunting coat as well in the wet snow. Kept me nice and dry.

Great rain gear for the warmer weather. If the rain is coming down VERY hard, I go back to my 10X GoreTex because of a better hood design.

You might want to check out Rainshields O2's.

They aren't petrolium based so they breath really well.

I use them as much or more than my Cabela's Guidewear because they are great for warm weather. I sunburn easily (fair-skinned nordic) so I use them on really sunny days to keep from getting a bad sunburn. They are great in light to moderate rain. I pull out the Guidewear for heavy rain or colder conditions.

Haven't used them myself but several I know have them and love them. As for petrol based..I don't think Frogg Toggs are due to the breathability thats been reported.

Not my go to, top of the line rain gear, but I always carry it the boat for those unexpected storms or for partners caught without gear. Feels different, but keeps you dry....and that's what counts I guess.

Keep me perfectly dry, but not the most durable.

Pockets start to tear, etc.

Tough to be though for those really steamy rainy days.

All in all these things really suck and I don't recommend them to anyone seriously pursuing fish. Have worn them over the last year and they are pilled up, bare in spots, they leak in any kind of heavy rain, they tend to seep from the neckline even in modest showers, and durable they are NOT! If you do a lot of days you are going to be disappointed with them. As to the comparisons with gore tex on warm days, I feel these things actually breath less than a single layer of gore tex and wore gore tex for over 15 years in both warm and cool weather and feel I have a very good basis to compare the two particularly in view of warm weather use(I consider this over about 74 degrees farenheit).

Here are the pluses for the toggs as I see them
#1 cheap, whole suit for $80
#2 very light weight to pack and carry
#3 due to the cheapness would be very appropriate to carry for occasional guest without rain suits or emergency use, or if you are going on someone elses boat and space is at a minimum.

negatives

#1 not durable!
#2 wet necked (Worrall also mentions this problem I think)
#3 leak in heavy rain
#4 even with the bibs, the design at the bottom of the coat is stupid and makes it ride up, and sometimes rides up over the edges of the bibs on the sides if you reach in your pockets to get something, and you don't always know it until it is too late. They should never have put elastic here in my opinion, should have left it untapered and as a drape with a drawstring to tighten it for anyone that wanted it snugged. Stupid design, oh did I mention I didn't like this?
#5 the outer threads/fleece roll up in pills and tangles and it looks like crap(mars my inner beauty)
